I enjoy driving to a degree but get bored very quickly taking the same route to work

The only things that wind me up when I drive are...

Pin Salesmen in their BMW's Audi's Vectra estate rushing to their next big deal...driving up my arrse and flashing their lights when im already doing a decent and legal speed.

If anyone does it why are the always in those cars or a Merc?

Lorry drivers..why do those ****'s drive side by side when going up a hill forcing everyone else into the outside lane? ... if they do it to you go round them and get yourself in front of the one on the inside not leaving enugh room for hes silly mate to squeeze in in front of him...continue this all the way up the hill...they love it!!! (turn your cd player down so you can hear them going through the gear box!!)

I just wish eople would let each other out more often and hold up an apologetic hand when they do somthing wrong..I do,, we all make mistakes but it seems when your in a car other drivers feel the need to punish you for it.

i love driving too. do it all day and ill even go out for no reason for a drive if i feel like it.

**** my carbon footprint.

I really enjoy driving. Nothing, but nothing annoys me. I can be, and often am, in a queue of traffic for up to an hour. So? I could be in the outside lane of the motorway travelling at around 80mph when some guy comes up flashing his lights to indicate that he wants past. So what? I won't hold him up intentionally, but I certainly will not alter my overtaking manoeuvre to accommodate someone else's frustration. My wife says "toot him" or "flash your lights at him", but why, he's not bothering me?

And the moral is - be cool when you're driving - its the perfect time to chill out!

Normally I do except on Motorways at weekend when most drivers don't know that lane 1 (inside lane) can be used. If only they realised that they can use ALL three lanes of a motorway!!!

I hate driving; far too many idiots on the road.
I particularly hate motorways mon-fri when you can't use the left lane as it's full of lorries so you have to sit in the middle lane. You aren't allowed to exceed the speed limit so you sit on the speed limit. Then idiots that are speeding come up behind you and flash their lights! Why? If I sit on the speed limit then no-one behind can legally catch up with me. If they want to speed and risk a fine and drive over the limit - then that's their problem - not mine.

You aren't allowed to exceed the speed limit so you sit on the speed limit.

Even the police would agree that most drivers on motorways drive at, or just under, 80mph and if they dont exceed that figure, they wont be charged. I heard that straight from the horses mouth on a tv documentary last year. Do you know of anyone who has been charged with travelling at, for example, 78mph on a motorway?

bolo that is correct - I was taught to drive by an ex-traffic cop, he took me on the motorway after my test (pass+) and told me that anything under 80, you wont get pulled. I suspect the reason is that in many cars it is a comfortable cruising speed. Also there are many people who drive far faster than this. Minor speeding is not their priority.

Be wary of that Bolo, The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) guidance (not mandatory) for prosecution is 10%+2 = offence speed.
30 mph limit @ speed device measure of 35 mph = offence.
70 mph limit @ speed device measure of 79 mph = offence.

I don't know if this guidance relates to all speeding offences or particular devices.
For the ubiquitous Gatso speedmeter, I think the '+2 mph' allows for the radar Govn type approval accuracy of ±1 mph. Whereas the 10% part relates to the visual, time elapsed photo assessment... distance twixt road markings covered versus flash timing (allegedly the 'time' between flashes is operator adjustable 0.5 to 0.7 secs .. but the photo always shows 0.5 secs... Iffy, if true).

Type approval for a vehicle speedometer specifies error of +0 to +10%, so I'd guess manufacturers may aim at +5% to account for manufacturing deviations... When you read 40mph you are probably actually at 38mph -- at indicated 80 likely 76 mph.
:D

Speed limits aren't arbitrary figures, they are what they are and on motorways that speed is 70mph. If I drove at 80mph and killed someone due to that excessive speed, could I argue in a court of law that it was 'OK to do 80 without getting booked so killing that poor guy wasn't my fault'?

Or let's look at it another way. Trucks use the left lane as they are speed limited. Cars that want to drive at the legal limit can use the middle lane. Anyone that wants to speed and risk a fine can use the outside lane.

Where's the problem with that?

The decision is also influenced by the style of driving and whether the risk of pulling over a safely driven 80 mph is worth it. Officers used discretion. Of course with cameras and auto number plate recognition the automated system doesn't take into account the quality of the driving.

But I have heard that advanced image processing software has been ( is being ) trialled on CCTV feeds to detect erratically moving vehicles.

Have you any idea what a jobsworth this makes you sound Joe ... Something my 90 year old grandad would have said

There is nothing to stop you pulling over into the left hand lane when there is space to let others pass ... It is not your role to regulate the speed of others.

If everyone let people who want to pass do so the motorways would be a far less congested place. All you do by sitting at 70 mph in the middle lane oblivious to people behind is to cause holdups. This was proved in a TV documentary a couple of years ago where they filmed the M5 from a helicopter and watched as the traffic jams developed ... Volume of traffic wasn't the problem, it was poor driving practice.

This is also the cause of the overtaking lane moving slower than the fast lane ... Something we see so often in this country nowadays.

If people want to drive at 100 mph get out of their way and let them get on with it ... They'll get caught in the end

What choice do you have? Brake hard, shift from the middle to the truck lane and sit behind a truck then be unable to get back in the middle lane to overtake because I'm not 'up to speed'?

I don't set the speed limits. If the speed limit was 80mph then I could sit on that without breaking the law.

It makes me laugh that people go on about others traveling at the speed limit and sitting in the middle lane and how illegal it is (though it isn't) - yet totally ignore the fact that speeding is a bigger motoring offence and that you are likely to get booked and fined for it.

So what do you suggest I do when the left lane is full of trucks?

It can be classed as driving without due care and consideration as it forces others ( albeit driving above the speed limit ) for move from lane one to lane three to overtake. I have seen drivers pulled over at the Severn bridge crossing toll booths when they were seen lane hogging.

Yes but acting as a vigilante to slow them down is creating a hazard.

Use lane two to overtake them and return to lane one when three seconds ahead of the last truck you over took.
