Electricity tripped

Hi

My electric has tripped and will not turn back on. I have checked the fuse box and noticed the RCD has tripped. I flicked the switch on but then it tripped again and now it keeps flicking straight back off.

I have turned everything off and unplugged all appliances but it still will not turn back on.

The only connection I can make is that it might be to do with the smart meter. When it tripped I was pressing the smart meter in-home display looking at what I had used. The smart meter was only fitted two weeks ago. I have lived in this house since 2007 and the electricity has never tripped.

We had an extension in 2010, so the side of the house is still working okay. It’s the original house that has tripped. If it is the smart meter causing the problem would it have caused the other side of the house to trip as well?

Thanks

Doubt it’s the smart meter.

You could try turning all the switches off , (down) to the left of the tripped RCD.

Then reset the RCD. See if it will hold in.
If it does, slowly turn the switches (mcbs) back on starting with the lights or important circuits you need

Experiment to see if u can see if a specific circuit is causing the RCD trip.

Thank you so much for replying you have really helped as I didn’t know I could do this.

I have just switched them all off and the off switch has now stayed on.

I turned each one back on individually. It is the socket downstairs switch that is tripping. So I have the other three working now.

Is there a way to find out which socket downstairs could be causing it?

Thank you and Happy New Year

Same happened to me a month ago and it hasn’t tripped since. It could be a spider between live/neutral/earth that died and no longer conducts electricity.

First think of any sockets that aren’t unplugged.

Things like the fridge.
Anything metal.
Anything in the kitchen or util.
Make sure switches above washing machines etc are turned off.
Any outside sockets.

You will probably need to run an extension lead for your fridge to a cooKer switch or extension or upstairs.

If that causes a trip then you know what is likely the problem. You can also use extn to briefly test anything else you may have forgot to unplug

Thank you

I have just had a look round again and found a few other things to switch off. Everything should now be off.

Boiler switched off.
Oven, hob and microwave switched off.

Extension side (electric working)
Fridge
Washing machine
Dishwasher
Outside socket are all in the extension side of the house and electricity working as normal.

I’ve noted that the smart meter says inactive but not sure if that is connected.

I have tried to switch downstairs socket switch on but it trips everything again.

Photo to show digital display says inactive.

Have you just switched off the switch on the sockets downstairs or have you physically removed every plug from every socket?

If not done yet unplug every appliance from every socket downstairs and see if the circuit can be switched on with nothing plugged in.

You will probably need to get an electrician in.

How many socket points not working downstairs ?
Yes, will call an electrician. Thank you for your help so far. I don’t really understand it and not sure how to check how many socket points are not working because all downstair socket switch has tripped.
