Our figures were slightly down on 2016 but other european countries were significantly down, so yes a testament to our dedicated teachers.

Doubtless the usual fruitcakes will be along to claim it as a brexhit benefit.

I encouraged both my sprogs to read. Very important in my opinion. Well done you teachers!

So good at reading that the Government won't lower voting age to 16 and let them use their College ID for voting.

How dare teachers ask for a payrise. We are all in this together - billionaires and those on minimum wage - so please don't ask for a pay rise.

It's always a good strategy to find people who might vote for you, but can't and then champion their vote.

We should start by removing the linking of pay to time served. This blocks talent coming in to teaching from an industry background. There is also often no requirement to have any experience or qualifications in the subject they are teaching. Law, business and Computing are good examples. You only have to talk to the teachers to realise they don't have any real knowledge. People learn better if you can bring the subject to life. That usually requires experience.

Please explain why a doddering old fool can use a bus pass for ID but an 18 year old college kid cannot use their college ID?

The reason they don't even require experience is that they are just lowering standards to get anyone in. You want to bring experience into it - then you will have to pay better so your suggestion is bull.

Let's not have qualifications for plumbers and electricians, or doctors or airline pilots or engineers.

Because a doddering old fool is more likely to vote for the nasty party ;)

If you remove the link of pay to years served, then you can hire from industry and recognise their experience.

Many good potential teachers are willing to go in to education towards the end of their working life. It’s called a glide plan.

Experience is one thing, but knowledge of a subject as regards the academic process is another...

And given the nature of academies, there is no requirement for any qualifications to teach any particular subject...

Our youngest had an IT teacher who was a PE instructor - totally useless!

Luckily we could afford to get in a tutor, but shouldn't have had to. The kids of those who couldn't afford it suffered.

Teaching is a skill it's not just experience - I know many talented people in their respective careers but they would make lousy teachers.

If you removed the link of pay to years served then recognise the years in industry - why would anyone go into teaching then at the beginning of their career - they could do something else then drop into teaching later.

You can have 10 years experience as a dr - can I substiute all of that for dental work experience? It's both healthcare.

Going back to the OP...

Why is being fourth in reading the world's most read/written/spoken language being claimed as a success?

The UK should be first, no buts no ifs!
Because according to Tories we are sick and tired of experts - we don't need any more English speakers we need more docile plebs.

Reading is weird, I think largely determined by natural ability. It is thought that around 10% of people have some sort of dyslexia, most just don't know it.

I have 2 boys brought up in the same way. One always struggled with reading, late dyslexia diagnosis at 15.
Other son, now 13, has reading age of 16 according to school, but never reads. I can't get him to read a book - he says they are boring.
He just plays games and watches videos.

Maybe some focus on reading in school over the last decade has helped. But then, apparently we're no longer good enough at math, or practical skills. So maybe reading isn't everything anyway?
