Extend my fridge warranty (?) (Ed.)

Never bought an extended warranty and only once a £350 dishwasher went wrong at year 3.
So I'm winning.
I have a fridge bought in 1982 still in operation, outdoor under a canopy.
They don't make things as they used to.

never ever ever take out extended gtees
they include things you are already covered for [3 or 5 year cover including the cover you allready get like 1 or 2]
the sales person gets commission curries get commission, the insurance backer makes a profit
far far better to put 10-15% off your purchase price in a specific savings account and the additional above the 10-15% that product insurance would cost at inseption and as it needs renewal iff an on going policy renewal costs to an insurance account and self insure you will be on average over the years perhaps 20% off the accounts spent on repaires over a 10 year period with the other 80%at 2% interest a year will give you about 97.5% off your money now we wont get into the semantics off lost value with inflation the point i am making is on average around 50-75% off off added repair insurance is wasted commision or other money to profit so dont do it

Thanks everyone.
The fridge is about 28 years old !! and I think it just needs a new thermostat which will be the 3rd time I have replaced it, first time was 13 years ago and the second time 6 years ago so the stat lasts about 6 years and cost about £26.
I wonder how much energy I would save with a new fridge over 6 years. New fridge £180 - minus the £26 I would of spent on a new stat = £154 so would i save £154 over 6 years ? is that the correct math ?

I never knew fridges depreciate too.

Just fit a new thermostat and take it from there. Small repairs should be allowable but something like a fluid leak or a compressor failure then ditch it away and buy a new one.

If its a normal fridge then not a lot. If its an inverter one then yes, you might save a couple of pounds.

Plus the cost of energy saving, over the years..

This is partly my thinking that if I buy a new stat at £26 then as its 28 years old there must be something else that is about to fail - like a leak or something not fixable by me.

The seals could do with replacing I suppose, there is lots of scratching on the inside base from 28 years of sliding the salad crisper (what ever f-ing use that is ) in and out which is difficult to clean stained from mouldy cucumber and the like in the past so its probably not the most hygienic of places to store food.

Just done a search and I can get a new stat for £18. So I am thinking now to just do that.
What is happening is that it wont shut off and is self identifying as a freezer. So I assume its the stat.

Here's what you need to do.

If you don't mind buying the replacement parts for it every x years to keep it going and you like the fact that's a more cost effect way to do it (rather than outlay £160 for a new one in one go) then keep on doing that.

If you're getting fed up replacing the parts and don't mind spending the £160 for a new one, do that.

I appreciate the money side of things is often a very real consideration for folks so I don't discount that. However if that's not you, buy the new one, me thinks you're verging on overthinking this ;)

I worked in Currys years back as a YTS. Boy was it drummed into us to push push push the extended warranties ...
