Stuck in a tin can for 9 months and they are barely touching distance from the Earth? We have all this tech, research, shuttle craft and it takes 9 months to resolve? WTF?

Can you not see the huge amount of planning that goes into this type of operation, it isnt like ringing the AA because you have broken down.
What with a 360 degree, birds eye, uninterrupted view of space, no doubt they'll have plenty of footage of aliens to hand over during their debrief.
They could have been brought back months ago but they didn’t to save money
So it could have been done if there was any urgency
