Good riddance tobacco!

having a low IQ isnt a mental health problem.....

That's true. However your suggestion is that cannabis use damages the brain.

There are plenty of studies which suggest cannabis use damages the brain, plenty of studies which suggest cannabs use doesn't damage the brain. Basically these studies don't really do anything except suggest more research is required.

The recent study of cannabis use and IQ was one of those studies which is authoritative which is why I mentioned it. They studied a lot of people and followed them up for some time. The conclusions were that young teens can damage their brain smoking weed (assuming lower IQ = brain damage) but by the time you reach 18 then cannabis is pretty safe stuff.

If you take this message back to the earlier studies which aren't so authoritative then it helps explain the results. The brain is developing until late teens and cannabis use does seem to affect this development in a negative way. Once you are a tad older, 18 was the year given, you aren't really at risk.

However it's certainly one of the safest recreational drugs out there and a lot safer than tobacco (or booze).

you need to rewrite that, makes absolutely no sense.

Tobacco kills 50% of those that use it. Around 100,000 deaths per year. That's more than Wembley stadium at cup final or opening ceremony of the Olympics. Every year, year in year out. A million people per decade. How many does heroin kill?

You can't be serious!
Hard drugs and cigarette smoking are NOT in the same league.
Do you personally know anyone who has robbed, raped or murdered whilst under the influence of their last ciggie?
Whereas I know for a fact two hard drug users.
One is currently in a prison for the Crimminally Insane after smothering his own 6 month old son. At the time he believed him to be Damien from the Omen. He still believes he's rid the world off a satanic child.
The other is a dead head and wasted away and is regularly in and out of prison. The last time for GBH.

I know several people who have died from lung cancer. You are right, tobacco isn't in the same league - it's in a league of its own. A million people dead every decade. What else can match that? (not even WW2).

The stats given for smokers are very misleading though, 2/3 of all deaths in the UK are cause by smoking related diseases.....but only 50% of that figure actually smoked?

Not even WW2. Wow! A million smokers a decade compared to over 50 million from 1939-1945, not counting Nazi concentration camps. Someone's sums are a wee bit suspect there.

Do you drive a car? Do you fly in a plane to go on holiday?
If so you are adding far more pollutants to the atmosphere than any smoker. Where do you think the electricity comes from to power your computer? A power station unless of course you're sitting pedalling a dynamo as you type.
Now .. on the otherhand, if you're talking how a personal life choice can determine cause of death did you know it won't be smokers who bankrupt the NHS ... a recent survey carried out by the BMA has expressed concerns that in 20 years the collective health of the UK population will be so dire due to the increase in Type II Diabetes that the NHS will go broke through obesity related illnesses and that did'nt even factor longterm disability care into the equation.

You quoted me but only up to a comma. You gotta do better than that if you are going to look smart. Did you read what came after the comma, cos it's sort of important to my argument....

yep, I apologise, I read it incorrectly...

How many BRITISH people died in WW2? The million per decade is just the UK alone. If you think it's OK for 50% of smokers to die from their filthy habit then fine. The other stuff you mention is irrelavant to this thread.

Yup, that's exactly what I say. It's the smoker's choice. Thanks for recognising that point.

Whilst I happily complied with the No Smoking in Public as I can see an asthmatic or indeed any non-smoker wouldn't want to be wreathed in clouds of smoke I get narked at how it's escalated into a witch hunt calling for a future total ban. Smokers are becoming the new social leper.

After smokers who will be next? Drinkers? The obese? So much for free choice.
And the other stuff I mentioned is about a relevant as the mention of WW2 but it didn't stop that been cited as a comparison..... and I notice nor did you answer if you drove a car or added to the worlds filthy pollution yourself. ;)

Hell yeah...we certainly should ban obesity.

Why is it so many obese women wear leggings ?? And with holes in. Should ban that.

While we're at it we should ban old unfit men from wearing bright white trainers. And jogging bottoms. Many of them have are clearly unfit and just look like a walking contradiction.

I think we could start by making the doors of macdonalds smaller. If you can't get in through the door you need to eat some salad for a while.
While talking about macdonalds i'd like to say that i'm shocked at how successful it is in this country.

Finally we should ban young men from wearing jeans that are soooo baggy that they look absolutely ridiculous. Some wear jeans so baggy that you can see their pants. How has this come about ? El Grosso or what ?

we should get rid of the ugly, old, stupid and severley disabled too, anyone who doesn't economically contribute or is not considered beneficial to the gene pool..... bang!!

I think if tobacco was phased out, i.e. made less available over the generations and was done so that we evolved into a non smoking nation, then future generations will look at tobacco and wonder why anyone ever did it.

Think about it - burning tobacco and inhaling the poisonous fumes or smoke, which incidentally is full of chemicals, is a ludicrous thing to do.

Alcohol IS just as harmful when abused but when drunk moderation it can be beneficial and is a pleasant social medium, so the call for a ban on alcoholic drink is ridiculous.

Similar thing with drugs especially pharmaceutical products that are abused.

Heroin is a wicked drug and has no place in society, unlike another opiate derivative morphine (diamorphine) which is an incredible pain-killer but has huge side effects.

Not one single pro-smoker on this thread has given any credible or sensible reason to not phase out tobacco. Quite the contrary, anyone reading this thread will be wondering why we still sell the rubbish.

I think we all forget, that life itself, always ends up with a fatality. There's just no escaping the inevitable.
If you can state the one thing that's definitely going to happen in your life, then that's , that one day, you will definitely die.
Whether we choose to smoke. drink, eat fat foods, take drugs, or eat healthily , exercise, we will all die one day. ;) ;)
