However as the government is constantly lecturing those at the bottom about standing on their own two feet and not to expect support from the state, is it right that these big companies should be given what is in effect a corporate welfare handout.

But they're not making much of a profit (if they were, they'd be paying more tax).

Here is a simple graph showing how these neo liberal policies have hit working people hard in american and yet they can convince half the population that they need more not less of these policies. Some people really can be conned all the time.

That is not true, they make lots of profit.

By judicious finagling, however, and with the aid of governments whose leaders themselves use secret offshore accounts and other dodges, they avoid paying tax on it

Perhaps ordinary citizens should pay a little more attention and stop subsidising these wealthy freeloaders.
