All depends what your buying the second car for .
Currently looking for a bmw z4 or 4 series convertible basically as a play car so it will get very little use and will be petrol and manual as opposed to the 2 first cars which are diesels and automatics

An mx5; far superior car, better handling, and quite likely cheaper too.

Potentially going EV shortly.
Current car does 40mg and costs me about two grand a year in fuel and tax (10k). EV would cost me about £160 in electric so there is a saving to be made.
Values of EV seem to fall rapidly so depreciation is a concern. If I'm saving circa 2k per year in running costs it may be viable

that was my initial choice but looking at an older one
But when you look on mot history a lot of the mx5 `s seem to suffer with fair bit of rust on the subframe etc but still looking at them

MG4 if you fancy a electric, don't be put off by the ice brigade they have never owned an electric and only spout the normal youtube packs of click bait rubbish.

Our son got one through work, been excellent range is advertised as 270 miles but with real world it gets 200 miles. But do the maths re depreciation and running costs. Calculate the total cost of ownership rather than fixate on one metric.

We have a leaf as out secondary car, which turned out to be the daily drive, the 2017 passat only gets used for longer journeys and its getting to the point where just renting a car will be cheaper for the odd time its used.
I agree.

We have an MG4 and it's a cracker. Does 200 miles min on a charge. I can charge it at home for 7p/ kWh. We do travel long distance in which case we use higher speed chargers which are a lot more, but overall, our charging costs are not prohibitive.

Petrol imho fir a car

And best advised to stay away from Chinese cars

Spares.

Plus the Chinese can’t be trusted imo
( scoundrels ?)

If you get a decent EV I think there will be a strong possibility that it’ll actually become your first choice car except when you need to do a long journey.

Third, fourth, fifth and sixth cars are where you buy the sporty little numbers for a weekend jaunt or a bit of tinkering

A 10 year old Toyota with steel wheels (for the potholes) will cost you a few thousand pounds...

And last for another 10 years!

Leaving you the left over money to enjoy on other stuff :)

My present diesel does 60mpg round the lanes, why would I want any other tech!
miss Motorbiking's 116d was the same, easily exceeding 60mpg, sadly it had to go, because of the evil mayor of London. She doesn't like driving the Tesla, so we got her an X1. Swapped a 60mpg car for a 40mpg car with basically the same engine.

I still have my 4 series convertable 435d - love it to bits and drive it whenever I can, even though the Tesla is faster. I think my son has his eye on it.

Bizarrely an old toyota of ours passes the ULEZ test despite costing a fortune in road tax...

Go figure!

Not that I'd drive into London nowadays!

The Dacia spring is the first of the new wave of EVs. If the BYD Dolphin was the right price (it isn't) it'd be my ideal second car.
