I don’t. I moved out 34 years ago. I’m not speaking for myself. Even so, it’s a pretty stupid thing to say - lots of people have absolutely no choice where they live whether it be for work, family or financial reasons.

I know you were posting about a friend / acquaintance: I can read.

And, it is not a stupid thing to say:

- living in a place where "you" (for ease of typing) need a car - coz things are too far to walk to, and you won't use public transport
- but parking and driving the thing is a royal ballock-ache, and costly too

"Absolutely no choice" is cr@p, most of the time: they just won't make the changes necessary, then carp about it constantly afterwards, like some sort of martyr or hero.

Even it is not convenient
This has gone off topic as usual. Nobody said it’s that much of an inconvenience running a car in an inner city area apart from you. The inconvenience would be not being able to charge an EV in such a place. Do you/have you lived in an inner city area in the last 5 years or are you just summising what it’s like?

Why do you run a moped, out of interest?
Moped? I don’t. I have a scooter that you need a full bike licence to ride because it’s easier to get to work on when travelling on the A13 because it’s often chokka with people in cars who moved out, coming back in to go to work. Public transport is too expensive and unreliable for them to use.

Some interesting views on here. Still undecided on what approach to take ….

And the poll results so far seem to be split between petrol and EV - with little interest in hybrids

Hybrids are fine, but they're just more efficient Petrol/Diesel cars.

The one question that hasn't been asked is: how many miles does this car do a year?

I was chatting with an EV company car owner recently, who's main usage is his journey to work and back. He has a large drive and an externally mounted charging point. All fine and dandy.

However, when it came to going on a long journey, he needed to do some research and plan his route, depending on where there are EV charging places available. He said the worst part of his journey was when the car was low on juice and they were struggling to find an alternative charging dock, to the planned one that was busy or full.

Personally, I just want stress free motoring, wherever possible.

I currently have a van for work but that is being sold as I’m retiring so I need a run around - as for mileage ? Good question maybe about 5 k per year

OP said they already have a"decent ICE car, which they will be keeping ".

Their question was about choice of second car.

Back on topic, my experience would be to completely rule out hybrids.
Economy is rubbish, half that of ICE.
Quite how the manufacturers claim 300mpg is beyond me, and utterly unachievable in real life : in the same way that, sure, I could be married to Sandra Bullock........

The hybrids we have, they have to be recovered and recharged, if anyone leaves them undriven for a fortnight.

ICE and hybrid systems to go wrong : unnecessary complexity.

Even if you did have a plug-in hybrid and plugged it in every day (to maintain the 30 mile - or-so range), and didn't use the petrol at all, wouldn't that tell you that you'd be better off with full EV anyway?
