All depends if I could continue to get my cheap cigarettes and wine and beers from France or Belgium after we leave. , if not I will vote remain.

Why is our taxes too high on Cigarettes? where the **** is European Union and not forcing our government to bring tax on cigarettes to the same level as other European countries?

Would that not automatically prevent smuggling and black market of cigarettes, thereby earning our Govt. more revenue instead of lining up pockets of smugglers and paying tax to european countries from where cigarettes are purchased.

You would often think budget after budget, tax on cigarettes goes up! Chancellors need seeing psychiatrist. This is what is damaging our economy.

Have a word with Gideon, he's kept the tax on cocaine low. but even he has to snort it through a £20 note rather than a fifty...That's austerity for you.

I would imagine that the limits for cigarettes and alcohol from EU countries will take the same form as current limits on duty free goods.

I am a compulsive smoker, to me cheap cigarettes is far more important than leaving EU, I am in.

Unless our duty on cigarettes goes down to the level of European countries, then no problem I will toss a coin, heads for staying in, tails out

Is it not possible that if we were to leave the EU, then sales on the ferry could once again be Duty free, saving you a few more bobs..?

To be fair, your wish to remain if it keeps the price of your ciggies down is one of the sanest reasons to remain that I have heard.

Not sanest in the least, when i can save over £2500 a year on my smoking alone, and lose out more much much more as my ISA savings will also crumble if share prices starts to go down as European investment starts to shift out, and they will when all foreign banks start moving out of Britain, already a mate who works for a German bank has been put on 3 days a week as the bank has started to shift its affairs to Germany even before the polls, my mate told me some French banks will be doing the same, most of our cars we now manufacture under foreign flags like Toyota, Nissan and few others will shed jobs as demand for our cars will suffer through back lash, Japs might withdraw from Britain if their car sales export from Britain to Europe drops in numbers to European customers, our love for BMW, Merc, Audi will cost us more as our GovT. will have to put import tariffs same as Europe will place higher tariffs on our exports, japanese may withdraw from Britain altogether or reduce the manufacturing to a very small scale for British market, and invest more heavily in European countries like Hungry, Romania, Greece, etc etc, which may infact be better for those countries to bring in higher wages and better standard of living to catch up with rest of Europe, so they won't have to come to Britain to seek better pay., we also have too many red tapes as well which makes Britain less attractive to foreign investment. This may make many Brits leave Britain for other countries like Australia, New Zealand, canada, USA, and that means we will have to bring in more skilled workers from abroad, just leaving europe doesn't mean all our problems will get resolved overnight, they won't in fact it will get much worst, immigrants is an issue and it only effects about 23% (National opinion) and not DIYnot opinion.

Except that alcohol and tobacco are no strictly duty-free. The are subject to local taxes or tariffs, or reduced taxes. Compare prices of goods in such so-called duty-free shops, say in UK airports, UK/French ferries, Dubai airport, Singapore and Hong Kong airports. You'll find quite a difference on price range.
Dubia tends to be cheapest of them, or so I've found. For instance, there is very little difference between so called duty-free Ferry prices and normal supermarches in France.
But the duty-free comes with limits. There are no such limits within EU or on UK/French ferries.

For instance, strictly duty-free tobacco is limited to ½Kg or 200 cigarettes, whereas there is no limit on UK/French ferries or within EU.
Duty-free alcohol limit is about 1 litre spirits and a couple of litres of wine. There are no limits within EU or on ferries.
