Alas, the bait wasn't taken .... merely nibbled... ;) :D :D :D

I have a reply from the technical dept...and it is not good news for me...it's not all bad news at this time, as I have spoken to Mick Alenby on the phone today as he called me. I have to return my camera to Canon and they will then issue a replacement unit...

I think this means that Freddie was correct..whilst the unit I have is what the manual says it is, it is not one that should have been sold to me..thus all retail units are plastic bodied and NOT mag-alloy.

I suppose there is a reasonable explanation, but it is not my problem I hope..

So Freddie, I now apologise to you, I stuck to my Guns due to the information I had, however you were 100% correct and I was being blooming stubbon...

Mr Franklin

With reference to your enquiry regarding the materials used in the manufacture of your camera I can confirm that your camera is manufactured using a magnesium-alloy shell that is covered in ABS plastic. As with standard units the chassis of the unit is A3 Stainless Steel.

Unfortunately I must now inform you that the unit has been sold without the permission of Canon and the unit may be stolen property. The unit was part of a batch destined for the Chicago Police Department. I would ask you to contact Mick Alenby in UK Customer Services regarding replacing this unit with a legally obtained replacement, I have informed Mick Alenby of the situation and that you shall be contacting him. I would ask that you supply Canon with the original reciept for your Camera as this will be required for Canon to take this investigation further.

Paul,

Please find attached an email I have recieved from Mr James Franklin here in the UK. You will see in his email he has included the serial number of his US purchased camera (EOS 350D) which he is enquiring about. As you will see from my responce I have furnished him with the information I have available and I would be grateful if you could do a serial number search on your database in order to adequately answer Mr Franklin's questions.

Should there be any problems please contact me.

Mr Franklin

I have passed your enquiry onto our technical department in the US for a resolution of your enquiry as they are able to use your camera serial number to establish what it is actually manufactured from and which series it is part of.

For my part I am unable to help other to state that when Canon originally planned the EOS350D it was designed with a magnesium-alloy body and a Stainless steel chassis. Due to price point concerns it was decided that the magnesium alloy body would make the camera too expensive as an entry level Digital SLR, so this was changed to a high impact ABS body.

Many manuals had already been produced in preparation for the launch, and whilst these were recalled, it is known that some made it into packaged units. It is possible yours is one of these units, however that would mean your camera had been in the retail outlet for some considerable time before being sold.

To cloud this issue further, there were a number (3500) units produced with magnesium alloy bodies which were supplied to US Police Departments, the US Military and Justice Department. It is possible that some of these units found their way into retail outlets.

I am sorry I am unable to supply a definitive answer, but the Technical Department will be able to answer your question with the supplied serial number. They should contact you within the next 72 hours.

Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Regards

Subject: What is my EOS350D made from??

Hi,

I wonder if you can help me. I bought a EOS 350D in Atlanta in August 2004 and I have a problem with what the camera is made from. This follows a discussion with others on a forum. My Manual states that the camera is made from a Magnesium Alloy body covered with ABS plastic and a stainless steel chassis..however all the information on the web and from other sources states that the 350D does not have any magnesium alloy in it's construction?

Can you please clarify this situation and allow me to put put an end to a debate that has been going on for months..

For Reference the camera serial Number is: (removed for security)
Colour of Body: Canon Black
Place of Purchase: Atlanta Photographic Supplies (Canon Service Centre): Atlanta: USA
Date of Purchase: 12 August 2004 (Scan of reciept enclosed as attachment)

Thanks for your help in this matter

Regards

James Franklin

But what happens if I need to get it repaired....

I'm going to have a think about this before making a decision completely...

Oh and Simon..I simply wanted to end the silly comments and remarks from Freddie..personally I diodn't give a stuff what the body was made from..

if you bought the camera in good faith and have a receipt then legally its yours and they cant request it back (i havnt followed the whole saga forgive me i was picking my toenails at the time) or did you buy it in the us?

You will find it easier to drain the Pacific ocean.

There's something to be said for disposable cameras!

Could you sell it on eBay for a premium, as its built to the super-duper kick-ass Chicago PD spec, and then buy yourself a kosher one and still have a bit extra left over.

I can't see you really getting a knock on the door from the Feds for this....

alternativly go back to canon and point out you bought it in good faith not your fault blah blah blah and point out you will end up with lesser spec inconvenience blah blah blah etc etc and see what they come up with!

p.s. dont actually say blah blah blah to them, it will probably annoy or confuse them!

I spoke to my cousin a little while ago, Lyndsey is a solicitor (not criminal..she deals with mental health and social issues) and she is unsure of my legal position, buying what may be stolen property in good faith is no defence as far as she is aware.

I accept that it is unlikely that the Feds will be knocking on my door, however they may get the Plod to have a chat.

I've faxed my solicitor to see what he says about it.

I think I may try to hang onto my one, just to be bloody awkward to be honest, however if it is actually stolen then do I want it? Surely, if I sold it knowing it may or was stolen, would that not be a criminal offence?

Where is that Mustapha when we need him?

Thermo, your an ex-plod, what is your take on it seriosuly, I have been told it may be stolen, so surely would I be liable if I sold it, hung onto it?
