Desparate for asylum. If they claim asylum in a country other than UK, but they speak English, or have familly and friends in UK, they've reduced their chances of making a sucessful go at rebuilding their lives.

Most asylum seekers do not choose UK as a destination.
The few that do choose UK to claim asylum for several potential reasons:
They speak English, they don't speak any other European language,
They have family or friends here already,
Those two things above all other issues make rebuilding a life so much easier.

Having friends and family close, and being able to speak the language makes it so much easier.

If the asylum seeker cannot prove their identity, nor their country of origin, how can justify their claim they were being persecuted?

Additionally, when you're runing for your life, you don't bother to stop and look for your passport, if you have one.
And you can't apply for an exit visa from your country of origin, they'd lock you up.
