New roof just done (is this a bodged job?)

Have you checked to see if they are indeed VAT registered? If they charged you VAT they should have given you a VAT receipt with their VAT number. If they didn't then I would be inclined to contact HMRC/Excise.The government don't care if you get ripped off but if you paid 20% on top via VAT, the tax man wants his cut. From personal experience the police don't care but the tax man does (given that the work was done, albeit badly).

Oh, and does your bank statement show the true name of the account holder? I ask because last year, I was ripped off by a dodgy builder that paid me via a business account at Llyods bank. When I asked Llyods for more info about the business account they gave me loads of bs about the data protection act. I told them that the data protection act only applies to private individuals, they still refused to help me.

I emailed the information comissioner's office. They actually rang me back, rather than emailing me to tell me that I was correct and that Llyods bank should have told me who the business account was registered to. I didn't chase it up, I was only 2 grand out of pocket.

I hope you get things sorted. I am not overly confident though. Best/worst case scenario you probably wont get your money back but someone might go to prison for VAT fraud.

If you pm the name of the person/firm, I will do some digging but I am still in "hey the pubs are open and I haven't seen my mateX for months" though.

There are number of genealogy sites that will let you have free data search access for a month, you might be able to find out where they live BUT you may then find that that they have a number of unfulfilled CCJs at their parents' address. An address that no one can ever find them at because their scummy parents shrug their shoulders when the bailiffs turn up.

Google "toby smith cowboy builder harefield"- The toad that ripped off my stoopid girlfriend-there are lots of people that share the same name name- he took 3K from my GF and did no work. She found him on the same provider that you found your "trusted tradesperson".

Sorry, I appreciate that all I have done is provide you with a path to screw over the people that look like they tried to screw you over. No one on this site has tried to defend then. That in itself is very telling..

Can a company not be ‘vat registered’? He told me I had to pay into his personal account as he said he’s sole trader.

P.S. How do I pm you?

I can see how it would look better with staggered joints, is there any other reason?

Oh yes - with slates (real or man-made) with the joints in line you will get leaks. Whilst the sarking will, for a while at least, stop the water penetrating into the loft if it's tight it will hold water against the battens and eventually cause the battens to rot and possibly the joists as well.

Correction
Just checked the Marley site and I see the tiles are 'concrete' however it does say that the tiles should be laid bonded. It also says the tiles are interlocking which does reduce water penetration but unless the tiles are specifically designed to be laid unbonded they will not stop water penetration.

Maybe worthwhile having a read of Marley Tiles (expand the tech section) and Link.

Lack of bond on these single lap interlocking tiles will not leak as long as the head lap is correct.
Slate be it natural or man made are a completely different kettle of fish. They are double lap and work differently to the tiles on this roof

You only have to be VAT registered if your invoiced work is above £85,000 PA. As a self employed decorator, I am below that threshold and want to continue to be so... If any invoice mentioned VAT then if you contact HMRC they will look in to it (because it is fraud, and very, very illegal). I do know some roofers that manage to stay under the 85k limit, and yes they are self employed but they work on their own

With regards to contacting me, I think you just click on my name and then start a direct conversation. I am happy to help if I can but don't expect an immediate response- I am a bar fly and sometimes get distracted- I will help though. Regards.

As a roofer ,If you supply materials then it's virtually impossible to turnover less than 85 k.. its more involved than simply that anyway

Anyone that has that name should change it by deed poll . To me it says P****. particularly in roofing and driveways.

Funnily enough, when I started to trawl through his Facebook profile and started to look at his family's profiles, his mum sells fake clothing logos and "likes" ornately painted horse drawn caravans... nuff said.

Funnily enough, or not so funnily, I had to return the tools that he had left behind. The only one of value was a Hilti cordless drill with the serial number scratched off. He gave us the address. I turned up there and it was his P**** brothers house. On knocking on the door he, the brother, started being a bit of an ar$e, then he saw my massive Irish mate that gave me a lift there and soon became less of an A-hole.

Personally I would have refused to give him the tools back but SWMBO was worried about him turning up after he had threatened her previously over the phone.

Scum, born of scum.

Second day of rain and the loft is already getting wet!

not only around the chimney, it’s now leaking next to the party wall, is the membrane supposed to be hanging like this?
