The point is, nobody is forced to pay roaming charges if they don’t want to. It only seems to be the remainers that pay so they can say "See, leaving the EU has cost me. It’s shît". The wise Brexers know how to avoid those EU imposed charges. In fact it’s nothing to do with the EU really. If plenty of other operators can offer it, why can’t they all offer it? It's just a con by some networks using Brexit as an excuse.
When they were forced to offer EU roaming, who do you think paid for it? I’ll tell you, everybody that had a mobile whether they used EU roaming or not.
Wise brexers is an oxymoron in my opinion. The fact that you now get contracts that include "free" roaming at a markup and no roaming at a cheaper price, it means you're still indirectly paying for roaming. Or you can go to a piggyback network that make their profit by reducing costs on customer support. Many of the piggyback networks don't have a helpline to call when things go wrong, so you're paying for it there by reduced service.
Everyone's situation is different but little benefit, if any, has come from brexit for me. It's a major reason why cost of living and inflation is rising higher in the UK than most of the EU in my opinion.
The company I work for makes industrial processing machinery. Designed and built in Britain. For at least 10 years pre brexit, we sold on average 20 machines a year, mainly to the EU, 4-6 million turnover per machine, healthy profit margin from what I gather. Post brexit, we've averaged 4. The drastic change is not coincidence, it's not COVID related as our EU competitors aren't having the same issues, what's on the market and our machines haven't changed. We were in a good market position at competitive prices, what has changed are the the new challenges and costs of import/export from UK to EU.
We've downsized considerably since, relocated to a smaller premises, and slashed our profit margins to try and regain market share. It's not worked thus far. Like brexit or not, the way it's been handled is shambolic. Lies, broken promises, and U-turns every step of the way. But with the clown Boris Johnson leading it, how could it have been anything other than a circus?
Anyhow, this is off topic. Doesn't matter who's fault roaming charges are, result is the same. Post-Brexit Britain pays roaming charges and you need to put in a little additional effort when picking your contract to manage the charge. You can either pay directly via the charge itself or indirectly to a lesser extent via higher contract rates or reduced customer service. Only winner here is the phone company collecting your money.
