Panorama - The Smart Meter mess

No

If you already limit the use so there is little waste, there is nothing much left to save.
This comes back to my earlier point. In a sense I'm already quite frugal with my energy use. So I can't be any more lean in my usage. If someone said to me 'ah but your £120 pm direct debit would drop to ~£60 pm if switching to a smart meter' then I might be interested ... however is this likely? I doubt it.

I don't and won't inconvenience myself with things that will (or might) save me £££ if said savings are minimal.

Did you know if you accelerate at 50% the rate, you will save on average £4.76 a month on your diesel bill? Nah, I'll not bother thanks.

what time you get up, easy one ==- when the power starts kicking in
when you go to work and return,== same as above
how many people are in your house === how much is being used
the sex of the people in your house, ===women using hairdryers straighteners which will have their own power usage signature.
what you watch on tv,=== based of when you put the kettle on as able to tell its the kettle via its power usage signature so after or before watching strictly come dancing.
when you go to bed, when you get up,
when you go on holiday, only background power used for a week
when you get back. == refer to the first one.
So its not difficult to work it out for yourself how it can all be done.

SM's don't save you any money, only you can do that. For those that scrutinise the gadget, all they are doing is seeing the obvious.

As you have said, if you are savvy enough already, then the SM gadget is pointless. All that leaves is a simple meter.

Give your head a shake.

Irrelevant.

However, the protocols in place to protect the consumer, are exactly the same for either meter. You are no more likely to be disconnected with a SM than you are with an analogue meter. FACT.
Are we on 100 pages yet'
No one is arguing that the protocols are not the same but you are more likely to be disconnected with an INTERNAL SM simply because the actual switching off is easier done remotely, but a dumb one they have to first gain access which takes longer and its possible that in that time the persons circumstances have changed. Cant you just agree to that.

Would you be happy with 24 hour monitoring of where you go in your car. And its not just about knowing when you cook your dinner its what time you get up, when you go to work and return, how many people are in your house the sex of the people in your house, what you watch on tv, when you go to bed, when you get up, when you go on holiday, when you get back.
I can see the future should we ever be in another covid situation.

'Citizens, for your own protection, your smart vehicle will not function external to your designated boundary area. This health protection measure will remain in place until further notice. Thank you for your compliance.'

Laugh all you like, as things like cars become ever more 'smart' and connected, the more capacity government will have to control them en masse.

I don't inconvenience myself in the slightest, don't need to use power at any special time, I can completely disregard, and simply carry on - yet I save at a guess, some £20 to £40 per month, by simply having a SM, and being on the tariff I'm on, which is only available if you have SM's. I carry on, as if I were paying the CAP, just like you do, no change, no difference - except in what I pay per unit of E & G, compared to you.

I don't know your house, nor your circumstances, but I have a 3-bed semi. My heating is set to ON, 24/7, 14C during the night, 18C minimum the rest of the time. I pay £100 DD, my bills are quite considerably less than that.

And via the SM it will not charge your car if you disobey the "orders" Recent new law regarding all EV home chargers that they have to be smart enabled -- why is that i wonder

Can you not see how easily it could be done.
No not really.

There are much easier ways to gather information from the general population than their electric consumption. I doubt that any normal 21st century, phone using, card brandishing average bod, would give two hoots whether the electric company knows that they boil the kettle every time Strictly ends a dance routine.
