police + 160mph = ?

I can understand and appreciate the need for training at these speeds, I have no problem with that. But to prevent misuse of the priveledge of such a position certain procedures should be implemented and I'm suprised that they don't exist already!

Anyone requiring high speed driving training should have it approved by a senior member then back-up co-ordinated to help if the worst were to happen. Not much to ask is it? This would then help prevent officers abusing the priveledge and remove any doubt whether an officer was just driving fast for the fun of it. It's all down to our blame culture again isn't it? "It wasn't my fault I was doing warp speed down the motorway, it's because the Police Force don't have any procedures" "Ok, then son, off you go"

We have had a lot of these speed drops in area, if you drive the roads regularly you don't always notice the tiny 40mph, not the usual large ones, have been removed, especially in the city. You then get ticketed for speeding the very next day after removal. If the road layout is changed in any way a whopping great sign goes up to tell you.

How about doing the same when a speed limit is reduced, instead of just removing the signs.

wots wrong with the police doing 160 mph they are training to do there job just like the r.a.f pilots in the lake district doing 1500mph over your head. the trouble with the public is that there is to many do gooders and not enough dogs **** in the public.

Do you mean practicing? you can't really train someone, or be trained to drive, whilst on your own can you? In reality if a police driver had to do this type of speed he would be in contact with his base, he would not be doing it off his own back and for no good reason, that is the difference.

You are missing the gist of the case, it is not about the speed in itself, it is about hypocracy and double standards. The public see a judge making excuses to justify his poor decisions. By saying the likes of the weather was good,road quiet, no traffic, early hours etc. These are not fair and proper reasons, they are excuses, this type of thing makes the public believe, rightly or wrongly, that they are all peeing in the same pot and it is difficult to believe any different.

What do you think about the other offences he got away with then? how would you feel if you had kids playing in the street and someone drove past at 84 in a 30 limit, to try his car out?

I doubt very much that a pilot could go doing the same thing in a plane and get away with it, be realistic it is nothing to do with do-gooders, he got away with it because he is part of the same system as the judge.

There are lots of issues connected to this case, some have said the Officer does not deserve to lose his Job, why not? If any of us did something so reckless at work it was an obvious dnager to others around us, then we would be out on our ears, unless the Police have the same rules applied the public will not be able to regain the respect they once had for the Police.

This Officer has made a fool of the system and more importantly his colleagues.

Driving at such breakneck speeds is foolish, I know, I have done it. In my old Vectra (Ex Police pursuit car) I regularly travelled one section of the A1M in excess of 140mph, one day I hit 152mph for about 5 miles according to my GPS kit. I was not clever, I was foolish. I only did this when the road was empty and always slowed to about 95-100 if passing other cars, however I realised that had something gone wrong, there was no way I would be able to control the car, despite having completed a Rally course several years ago. Human reactions are not fast enough, and my car would have been spread all over both carriageways. I stopped driving at that speed, I know the dangers and it is irrelevent how much training you have, a blow out at 160mph is catastrophic and fatal no matter who is dring the car..this is afterall, a road car, not a specially built race car.

He should lose his job, not as a Policeman, but as a pursuit driver, he should go back to pounding the beat unntil such time as he has demonstrated that he has understood what he did was wrong, why it was wrong, and why he should not do it again unless on a race track.

I'm not a legal type, so I don't know the answer, but have often wondered about this - Surely the offense is speeding, not being caught by a speed camera. Therefore you should be able to argue that it was all part of the same offense, not two separate ones, and save yourself 3 points and £60 ?? Don't know if you can though....

I think they should change the regulations to allow repeater signs in 30mph limits. It is stupid that 30mph is the most inappropriately-used speed limit, yet it is the ONLY one where they aren't allowed to put up repeater signs. A few years ago several people got their speeding convictions overturned because there WERE repeater signs Simply because the signs weren't allowed so it made the speed limit unenforceable.

If you don't believe me, drive through your favourite 30mph stretch and count how many speed limit repeater signs you see. Then drive along your favourite country lane and count the signs.

Yep !! I reckon the fatalities are more or less random with the inevitable statistical 'spikes' giving rise to camera location ... That is, in most cases where the 'rate' has dropped, it would have done so anyway, cameras or not....
The overall figures are apparently still going up ....... Nuff said !! Cash cow !!

FWL, no matter how foolish (in your own words) you say this is, it is still hypocritical for you to then call for this police guy's imprisonment.

I am no angel when it comes to driving as has been discussed on here before, but in terms of speed I have only been so silly once. Back when I was 18 I had a 2.8 V6 Granada Scorpio and the day I bought it I took it out to see what it could do. At 135mph I realised the performance of the car well exceeded the capability of my driving and backed off - much less than the 140-152mph you describe and for only a brief spot compared to your 5 miles.
