Why not fit a decent security system , and inside the garage use a Klaxon Master Blaster Siren with it. They cost about £100 trade.

I tell you, once they get in there, they won't hang around - its so loud, you can't bear to be near it ! Just hide it so they cant find it, or put it so high up that they cant reach it!

Its perfectly legal 127 Decibels of wailing siren - You will hear it all over the estate!

Couldn't be bothered to read all the bleeding-heart replies.

What about UK legislation?

I do aggree though, it is a right to protect your own property, but causing injury is not one of them, IMO. Scaring intruders and / or hurting their senses, IMO, is justified - so the sound bomb i am in favour of. OOI, i bought a simple battery powered burglar alarm from B&Q with a door sensor and a PIR, and its alarm is VERY LOUD and painful, you dont need to spend a lot of money.

What you mean is you aren't prepared to properly think through the implications of allowing people to kill others if they believe they are attempting to steal from them, as grasping the reality of the sort of society we would end up with would not fit with your idiotic views.

I've already been told by the local police that any evidence my cctv system gathers is inadmissible in Court because the DPA in the UK requires that you have to inform someone in advance if you intend covertly videoing them (no, I'm not joking, check it out if you don't believe me).

How do the police get away with the videos when filmed from bikes / cars and helicopters ?

As far as I'm concerned if anyone breaks into another persons property they forgoe any rights they have. If anyone breaks into my property I would attack with any means available to me, there's no way that I'm going to wait to find out if they've got a knife / gun / baseball bat etc.

We're too much of a nanny state and thats the reason the crime levels have risen to the level we have to suffer today. The number of times you read in the papers that the poor lad had to steal to feed his drug addiction - he wasn't born a drug addict, it's complete bullsh1t, a short sharp lesson is what these people need, a couple of months in hell and enforced drugs program to get them back on the straight and narrow.

But does someone breaking into your house give you the right to murder them? I once read of a man who broke into a pub, robbed it and before he left he pulled himself a pint. Unknown to him the landlord had left bearline cleaning solution in the line which caused the burglar to suffer from chemical burns in his throat. The burglar successfully sued the brewery for his injuries caused by the negligence of the landlord.
My main gripe lies with the whole legal system for not doing enough to deter crime, in a lot of cases now it seems as though they are doing more to look after the interests of the villain than the victim. Let the punishment fit the crime.

I was told be a police officer that if we ban a shoplifter from our shop, and they come in again and steal, its BURGLARY and they will be sent to prison  nice one

Sorry to be technical - but the Police cannot do someone for trespass. contrary to the once popular signs of 'Trespassers with be prosecuted' Trespass is not a criminal offence but rather a civil one and therefore not persuable by the Police. The correct sign would therefore be 'Trespassers will be Sued'

There is a criminal offence of Agrivated Trespass. This defined something like - entering private property for the pruposes of preventing someone carrying out a legal act - it was bought it to restrict the activities of animal rights protesters and similar.

Although living in a house and not having your garage broken into, or running a shop without your stock disappearing are both legal acts - the crime of Agrivated Trespass referres 'active' things - like exporting live animals, animal testing etc.

Mind you, I am not a legal mind - so I could be talking compelte rubbish. :D

Johnb thinks it does.

I think thats a little unfair I feel I have the right to use whatever force is needed to protect my property and my family. Is it right to allow them to rape your daughter or your wife?, wait until the slash you with a knife?, destroy / steal your belongings - as far as I'm concerned no it isn't. I've never stolen anything and I don't see why I should put up with theft.

If someone broke into my house what I said was I would lash out first and ask questions later. What would you do? Lets see how capable of thought you are:-

It's 02:00, you hear noises downstairs, your phone is downstairs and you have a baseball bat and a knife, over to you

Take the baseball bat and knife and jump out the window, run to a phone box. On the way, slash one of my car's tyres with the knife to prevent the theif/intruder getting a quick get away.

Smash the front door window with the baseball bat and shout ARMED POLICE

"""I was told be a police officer that if we ban a shoplifter from our shop, and they come in again and steal, its BURGLARY and they will be sent to prison"""

Thats total nonsence !

The crime of Burglary requires that the premises are broken into first!

As far as attacking the burglar, you are only entitled to use reasonable force to eject them from your property.

The son of an East End gangster I once knew found someone breaking into his van and attacked him with a hammer! The victim never made any complaint to the police!
