Smear Karma

My mum had a stroke 4 years ago, still going strong, but marbles are failing and my Dad, can't care for her any more. He's been paying around 60k a year and now she is in a home its £83k a year. He still has his own home to run and while being a "wealthy" pensioner, clearly there is no money left after those bills and his income taxes.

worked all their lives, paid taxes, etc.
Which highlights the issue of care of the elderly, 200 quid handouts won't help that.

Neither will this Labour government, they've scrapped the proposed 86k cap on care costs. Another u-turn, and another blow to the elderly.

I don't think UK retirees have ever had a period of time, so good. A lot of the old duffers voted for Brexit, so a to ensure that young will not have such an easy time of it.

Bless 'em.

And none of that is specific to pensioners.

I wonder why it is that the mostly elderly members and supporters of the Tory party are more concerned about handing out money to pensioners, even the wealthy ones, than about the younger poor?
It is specific to 20% of pensioners.

I'm neither elderly nor a supporter of the Tory party.

I just want a government that when voted in, actually stick to the promises and ideals that they told us they would stick to if we voted them in.
With this lot, we are getting a slow backtracking on everything they said they stood for.

Do we have a copy of the Labour manifesto where it said they would continue paying the winter allowance?

Yet care costs, and the cost of retirement homes has never been higher.
Just because the oldies have more disposable, rest assured that the system will expand to relieve them of it.

Supply and demand.
The supply is difficult due to regulation and labour shortages. The demand is ever increasing because of the average age of the population, and the ever increasing culture of putting elderly relatives into care.

Well explained.
I don't remember my grandparents generation having to scrabble around for tens of thousands of pounds a year.

I don't know. But all the messaging we've been getting was suggesting that they would.
Labour have used it as a straw man argument against the Tories on multiple occasions.

That was referring to the Tories, in September 2023.

Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor, said ministers should “not be breaking those commitments” that they made to older people in the last election. She said Labour would be bringing in a proper windfall tax on oil and gas companies that would fund help for elderly and vulnerable people with their energy bills.
So they had an alternative policy.

That's not an extreme. You should get out into the world a bit more and meet real people

But it is using a - somewhat extreme - example to denigrate the whole.

The logical corollary of MBK's post is everyone gets the allowance, whether they need it or not.

Data taken from 2021 census:

"Unpaid carers support many older people, and 20% of people aged 65 and older are unpaid carers themselves. Caring responsibilities can affect many aspects of a person's life, including their health, finances, mental wellbeing, and sleep. The most commonly reported challenge by unpaid carers is the impact of caring on physical and mental health. Other challenges include living in poverty, juggling work with caring responsibilities, and the COVID-19 pandemic"

Also, your point has nothing to do with mine.

I'm all for those in need retaining the assistance.
Some on here are falsely using emotive language - "poor pensioners" - as a veiled knock at anything SK.
Not all pensioners are "poor"......

So they worked hard, and scrimped and saved during 15% interest rates to put a roof over their head. Big deal.
This doesn't automatically mean they have loads of surplus cash.

And it doesn't automatically mean they don't.

A line has to be drawn somewhere and, even when it is, those ideologically opposed to SK moan.

Same as they would otherwise moan about "bankrupting the country", "magic money tree"....... you know the score (y)
