The situation in Russia is more like UK WWII. Any sort of pacifist locked up. Media wouldn't dare object but only news papers around really. Various races being deported and other actions.

Police in a number of countries may use tear gas, battons and all sorts when demo's don't suite them. Usually described as riots.
