So you too think you can create a gap behind you, either by going faster or slower and you think I don't understand.
Fair enough.
He said to create a gap in front of you.
I. e. by slowing down.

Yes, and the driver behind stays close, or gets closer. How has that created any extra safe space? It hasn't.He said to create a gap in front of you.

It doesn't matter how big the space is in front of you if the driver behind is too close.
And the point is, the tailgater is causing the problem, regardless of how much room you have in front of you. It is possible to need to brake hard even if nobody is in front of you, possibly for a stray cat, dog, child, ebike etc. It doesnt matter therefore how big the gap in front of you is.Taken to absurdity, you leave a mile between yourself, and the car in front.
You no longer have to brake hard, should the car in front slam on.
The idiot behind you has more time to react to your gentle braking.
Not perfect, but perfect would be you controlling the tailgater which, you should agree, is not likely.
But, as I alluded to, if it was pitch black and a deer ran out (or any number of similar situations) you'd have to stand on it. And if you had a tailgater behind, they'd be stuffed.tailgating = careless driving
brake checking = dangerous driving

As has been said, you can only drive your car. The only real option is to pull over and allow them to get away from you, or to stay in front of them and accept they are too close and may not react in time if you need to brake hard, for any reason.
Its the same point I've been making all along. Glad you caught up.At least you've got the correct end of the stick now.
NonsenseIts the same point I've been making all along. Glad you caught up.
The room in front is irrelevant
I’m not convinced he has any understanding. At least you've got the correct end of the stick now.
Here we go with the wild numbers...its about space not speed.
If the car in front is doing 40mph, you need at least 36m gap. giving you 2 seconds reaction time. If the guy behind has only got 2M then you need to create his missing 34m to give him the best chance of stopping. 5mph slower for 15 seconds will do.
Exactly! The speed limits in this country were set in the 1970s, vehicle technology has improved ten-fold and yet they have NEVER been revised.
It's hardly any wonder that people break them when they make absolutely zero sense a lot of the time.
315 ft@ 70mph.Anyone needs to mention that you need 300m to stop a car at 70mph or something along those absurd lines?
It’s nothing to do with stopping it’s reaction times.
Distance travelled in 2 seconds at those speeds.
It typically takes someone around 2 seconds to react to someone unexpectedly stopping.
You might be lucky and spot it quicker, you might be unlikely and be behind someone with better brakes.
315 ft@ 70mph.
96m.
Maybe Ray Charles while he's asleep. It typically takes someone around 2 seconds to react to someone unexpectedly stopping.
I can stop my wife's little A3 in a third of that.315 ft@ 70mph.
96m.
