A buddy of mine who used to race in several amateur challenges.. and did rather well, had the opportunity to accompany one of his customers who is a Cheshire Police driver on a mock pursuit. Initially My pal was rather blasé at what in his opinion was a rather starched and regimented style of driving but had changed his mind by the end. He explained to me that not only was it an issue of safely controlling the car but also he was blown away at the sheer amount of data the driver had to process to work out his best options as he drove. Driving a track is relatively simple but add other traffic, oncoming and on side roads, pedestrians, crossings, animals and everything else that is on the road and the quantity of data and the number of decisions that a police driver has to process every day is stunning.
