Let's face it, the human race is pretty thick really.

Yeah, who cares? I get by, that's all that matters.

Not jealous, you got it wrong. I just don't happen to think that £720 per day + £300 travelling is fair to society. Would you pay that for a brickie?

No, at this point in time, I wouldn't pay that for a brickie, but then, with due respect to brickies, their job doesn't carry the same amount of risk now, does it? However, if they all charged that, then I'd have either a) no choice but to pay it or b) to decide whether or not have the work done. I've been aware of chippies on £300/day up until recently. In their pocket. I don't take home that much.

You sell your projects for what you can get; I sell myself via my company on the self-same basis, taking into account the years of unpaid studying, the continued time unpaid that I have to spend to keep my qualifications, the legal responsibilities that I have and the overheads and time that I can't charge for that come with providing that service.

People aren't forced to use me as you aver: there are cheaper ones about and more expensive ones too. The whole point being that there is freedom of choice. But it's not just about cost: it's about the quality of service, the relevant experience that you have, the ability to interact with the customer, to give them what they didn't necessarily even realise that they could have.

If you're unhappy about paying that for an SE's services, then spend at least six years to train up and become one yourself. You might then begin to appreciate that, for the level of ongoing personal risk that we carry, the remuneration is actually pants in comparison to other professional occupations.

£720 per day sounds too much to me. I just don't happen to believe that any worker is worth more than 4 times any other worker regardless of their study. 15 times is simply taking the P. There are times when people MUST use a registered engineer - and you use that fact to your advantage (collectively) by becoming an elite cartel. If a brickie builds you a house you pay him for it - and that house then becomes an investment. Over a period of time the brickies work more than pays you back - plus the house may well still be there serving society 100 years hence. Whereas you go around and size up lintels (that Corus will do for free) - and charge people silly money for doing so. It's wrong. Sorry, but that's how I see it. You should work for less and the poor should earn more.

That'll seem cheap if you ever have cause to use the legal profession for a day's worth of their time. Or an accountant.

Anyhow, you go to Corus and get your lintels sized for free (and, of course, they won't be making any other suggestions that could save you money...) and shop around for some cheapo number-cruncher to do your calculations for other bits and pieces for you.

Then, if it comes to pass that said number-cruncher got something wrong and your building either moves or collapses, see what remedies in law you have. That is what you are paying a properly qualified SE for.

When the poor get off their arses and stop expecting handouts, then I'll have some more sympathy for their plight and work for less, knowing that I'm not lining their work-shy pockets.
