the combi boiler explodes, and the plasterer dies

The schools in question are not piped up wrong , I know of several boiler's that have been noisey , ketteling , due to a lack of flow around the heat exc , caused by a y plan fitted with out a by-pass .

Transam let me look at the FACTS.

1) System gets balanced for 11 degrees for cast iron boiler and upto 20 degrees for low content boilers.

2) With all rads open, pump is distributing water through all the rads and difference between flow and return is as stated in (1)

3) With all rads except the BYPASS rad now shut down water will be flooding throgh this final rad as it is designed to REMAIN open at all times

4) It is understanable that all rads could have TRVs fitted but I am talking about common sense. Common sense states one rad should not have TRV fitted to allow pump not to be stressed when other rads with TRVs fitted shut down.

5) If someone wants to fit a bypass to a Y plan, I say feel free. You do what you think right and I will carry on doing what is logical until someone has provided reasonable explanation WHY a BP should be fitted on Y plan other than 'just because it should'

a bypass will help with temp diffs when in htw only position, also will stop noise when the valve changes direction if say you have an Alpha pump.

why not fit one ? there not expensive nor do they take much time to install in most cases.

everyone has there own opinion, look at me i just loveeeeeeee Ideals!!!

building regulations require the installation of an auto bypass ,also we have experienced situations where the bypass radiator is insuficient to allow a minimum flow rate through the boiler causing intermitent overheat problems especially with small systems and low water content cast iron heat exchangers.

Not saying u are wrong , point I am trying to make is one size does not fit all , as I understand it someone was having a go at someone else in a patronising way which I think was not called for , what boilers are u fitting is it in the M.I's ??? it is not in J &S m.i's , although they would o.k it , raven heat on the other hand would not o.k this arrangement for the csi bioler when I last enquired , some time ago ???
what if it's on a microbore system , 8mm , 10mm

dfaz, could you direct me to this BC regulation please?

also will stop noise when the valve changes direction if say you have an Alpha pump..............Eh??? But an Alpha circulator slows down as the flow rate decreases. Gosh you sheep sha..ers have some strange ideas!!!...............

I know that its counter intuitive but closing the outlet valve of a circulator type pump actually reduces the stress on the pump.

The BBC used to have a water cooled 400kW LW transmitter and that produced about 250 kW of waste heat which was circulated to a cooling pond with some very large goldfish. The circulating pump was driven by a three phase motor taking about 7 amps per phase. As you closed the outlet valve the motor current reduced to about 4 amps.

Air fans react in the same way when you close off the outlet..

The fitting of an auto bypass is not yet mandatory for part L yet in Scotland (I think its part L) but would be best working practice to do so.
The amount of bypass rads fitted to combis with a massive 8mm plastic run and a tinu 0.5kw rad are unreal and boilers will be noisy!

10% of boiler heating minimum load for a bypass that gives you proper temp diffs and flow rate through pump and hex would be the basic requirements in my opinion.

But to be honest does the T stand for T.w.a.t as yer condescending manner on here certainly makes it look that way :D

Have to agree with all of shambolic's comment's !!

As I see it most boiler manu's that require a by-pass to be fitted to there boiler's do not make any mention in there M.I's that it is o.k not to , because a y plan is fitted , there fore u would need to ask them !
