Firstly, I oppose the death penalty.
However, I also oppose illogic.
The facts of the matter are that the US states that have outlawed the death penalty have far lower incidences of murder (up to 44% lower) than those that retain it.
Which one is the cause and which one is the effect?
Therefore we can say without risk of contradiction that the death penalty is useless as a deterrent.
I don't know how you can say that. Is there evidence that the
reason for reduced murder rate is absense of the death penalty?
It therefore follows that banning the death penalty in those states that currently use it would reduce and not increase the incidence of murder.
It might follow, but equally it might not, depending on the answer to the previous question.
it also follows that if the UK were to reintroduce the death penalty the likelihood (by the American model) is that the murder rate would rise - not fall.
It might follow, but equally it might not, depending on (a) whether the US cause and effect is as you believe, and (b) whether or not UK criminals would behave in the same way.
The bottom line is that the death penalty isn't about deterrence but about is a revenge killing orchestrated by the state.
I agree with that, but only because I believe it - I don't think you've arrived there by truth and reasoning; you've simply used the word "therefore" where it doesn't fit.
Therefore, we can conclude that the members of this forum that want to see its reintroduction are happy to see the murder rate rise as long as they can kill the murderer when they catch him.
That's certainly an interesting question, but it's not an irrefutable conclusion, because the basis of it doesn't appear to be factual.
Surely the definition of odd is subjective. Surely everyone thinks that at least one other person is odd. To me, someone who wants the death penalty. and whose vengeful thoughts blind them from reason, is absolutely
normal. Everyone has vengeful impulses at some point in their life. We live alongside each other, all hypocritically condemning everyone who's different.
Wanting the death penalty is fine. Actually
having it isn't.
