Stephen Smith, 64, from Liverpool, weighed 38kg and was gravely ill at time of death

"Smith, 64, from Liverpool, had a range of debilitating illnesses including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, osteoarthritis and an enlarged prostate, and used a colostomy bag.

His death was reported in April, months after he was forced to get a pass to leave hospital to fight a decision by the department to deny him of crucial benefits.

Smith, who could barely walk, was deemed fit for work after a work capability assessment in 2017, which meant his employment support allowance (ESA) payments were stopped."

Nobody should need these modern day food banks. The benefits system is extremely generous, and anybody who cannot live off these handouts is simply managing the money badly. Food is very, very cheap nowadays. Basic nutritious foods such as potatoes, rice and eggs can be bought very cheaply if you shop around - and these folks have time to shop around.

It's all about home economics. Our immigrant friends know how to do it. Look in any of the now numerous Indian, Polish or (washes mouth out) Pakistani food stores and you will see great sacks of stuff all over the place, heaving shelves full of god-knows-what all at rock bottom prices. They also know how to cook for a family (and indeed for several families) and how to eke things out and make things last. If they can do it, anyone can.

Benefits should not be paid in cash anyway, at least not to those who haven't contributed to the system. These people should not be paid in cash, but in food and the basics. Their handouts should be in the form of a food bank - not run by do-gooders, but state run. The prevalence of charity food banks is allowing a lot of scroungers to spend their handouts on luxuries; fags, drugs, lottery tickets, X Boxes, mobile phone ringtones etc.

Probably private contractors like Atos, the assessment model used by these outfits is based on a discredited American system used by health insurance companies.

This is truly shocking, but, this man is a victim of the generosity of the benefits system. He is the type of person to whom disability benefits and assistance should be given, but because the money is dished out so freely to all and sundry, he is lumped in with all the rest and viewed with suspicion. He is the baby thrown out with the bathwater. The benefits system is the root of all evil in this country; I'll never deviate from that line.

The assessment model used by these companies are outlawed in a lot of American states.
Courts over there have described them as nothing more than devices for disability denial.
The private health insurance company Unum which is linked to Atos had to pay out hundreds of millions of dollars to disabled claiments who had their benefits stopped.

Hey Andy, I believe that people who are mentally ill are also eligible for benefits, have you put your claim in yet.

Seriously how fukin stupid are you?

Whats the cause of the huge rise in food bank use?
Universal credit, not paying out for weeks and weeks.
Perhaps Andy might want to explain how people manage their money better on £0.00

Perhaps Andy might want to explain the problem with PIP assessments
Perhaps Andy might want to explain why thousands of dissbled people are really suffering due to Tory benefit cuts.
Perhaps Andy might want to explain why he has an utterly selfish attitude towards these people.

but where will the money come from?

We are one of the richest countries in the world. Other countries with less money do much better than us.
They don't **** the poor.

Make the big businesses who currently avoid paying tax pay up. Would be a start..

Its interesting that the rich have got much richer in the last 10 years.

Its almost like Tory neo liberalism is designed for self interest.
Oh thats right....it is.
Whilst simultaneously getting the electorate to vote against their own interests.

Its a clever strategy if you dont give a fck about people.

Capitalism can generate wealth but it doesn't distribute wealth fairly.
