"One day after Trump derailed a bipartisan government funding bill - with a big assist from the world's richest man, Elon Musk - he issued a new demand, for a stripped-down government funding bill that would also raise the limit on how much new debt the federal government can issue to fund its spending.

It was a big ask for many congressional conservatives who have long demanded that any debt increase at least be accompanied by cuts to what they view as out-of-control government spending. And Democrats, and more than a few Republicans, rejected it.

Trump's demand was also a tacit admission that his legislative agenda, heavy on tax cuts and new military spending, was unlikely to deliver the kind of reduction to America's enormous federal deficit that many on the right have been hoping for.

On Thursday night, this slimmed-down bill, along with a two-year suspension of the debt limit, came up for a vote in the House. Thirty-eight Republicans joined nearly every Democrat in voting it down.

This amounted to a stunning rebuke of the president-elect, who had enthusiastically endorsed the legislation and threatened to unseat any Republicans who opposed it."

As I understand it, the CR bill was a 1500+ page document supplied on Dec 17th and expected to be voted on, on Dec 18th, which gave the house less than 24hours to read it before casting their vote.

Without intervention, both Dems and Republicans would have voted on it without understanding what they were voting on as they were not provided with enough time to fully look over it.

Edit: I should add that it was everyday Americans who contacted their representatives and made their displeasure known with regards to how this CR bill was being handled which was why it got drafted down in size and created a delay. In the original 1500+ pages was a 3% pay increase for the politicians whilst many Americans are struggling to pay their own bills. Again, American taxpayers were not happy about this and said so.

It really was democracy in action although the USA is technically a republic.

The two are incompatible, you think?

No you're wrong. The documents are always finalised close to the deadline, that's how they do it there. They've been discussing it for weeks and came to an agreement.

Then Musk chips in and demands that he gets an exemption for his China investments and Trump decides to wave his willy and demand a debt ceiling increase.

It was killed off by President elect Musck because it didn't deliver enough tax cuts. The second version failed because Trumpf wanted to raise borrowing limits to compensate for loss of revenue from his proposed tax cuts. A kind of Thames Water approach to finance.

I think the title of this thread is wrong.

Trump wasn’t trying to stop the bill it was Musk, to save face Trump suddenly decided to scupper it.

Leon Mush used it as an exercise to prove he has power over Trump.

America is now a puppet for 2 man child egomaniacs

Any evidence of these everyday Americans contacting their representatives in bulk.

Remember it all happened inside 24 hours

Looks like VP musk wants something for his investment after all. And quickly

Didn't get it this time, but surely will

I think that when you get your news from two different places it is likely to cause conflict. I got mine from watching it all unfold at source as it happened. I think that is why there is confusion as to what is what.

You were in the House, Mar alago and various congressional offices?

A little bit Water Mitty if you ask me.

It is true that the CR bill normally gets handled in this way, as in it comes in at the last minute and the house do not have time to properly read it before signing off on it. It is Vivek Ramaswamy who took issue with the size of the bill, what was in the bill and the way in which it was trying to be rushed through. He highlighted this on his X account and asked voters if they were happy with it and if not to call their representatives. Americans called their representatives.
