MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities released video footage Friday showing Tyre Nichols being beaten by five Memphis police officers who held the Black motorist down and repeatedly struck him with their fists, boots and batons as he screamed for his mother.

The video is filled with violent moments showing the officers, who are also Black, chasing and pummeling Nichols and leaving him on the pavement propped against a squad car as they fist-bump and celebrate their actions.

I don't think it's worse than the Rodney King beating but less than a minute has been published so it's hard to tell - apparently it goes on for much longer...you can see he's stopped resisting and the police just keep on spraying his face, then start in with batons and further abuse before the video ends. Bloody cowards.
 
The disturbing video, which was released in four parts by the Memphis police department, included both body-camera and street lamp-mounted camera video. While Nichols’s injuries were clearly severe, and his physical condition in obvious decline, the video indicates that an ambulance did not arrive for more than 20min after the vicious beatdown.

The deadly attack on Nichols reportedly unfolded about 80 yards from his mother’s home.

In Memphis, but also across the rest of the US, officials had called for calm in the face of anticipated protests following the release of the video, which was expected to be graphic and brutal.

Joe Biden had urged for peaceful demonstrations, while acknowledging the deep anger stoked by the attack, saying: “Tyre’s death is a painful reminder that we must do more to ensure that our criminal justice system lives up to the promise of fair and impartial justice, equal treatment and dignity for all.”

Probably because history tells us that if they had been white cops the 'wheels of justice' would be turning far more slowly!

Irrespective of their colour, it's tragic that even though they were wearing bodycams they acted as if there would be no comeback.

The dignity of his mother during the press conference before the video was released was amazing.

And probably the main reason why there hasn't so far been rioting this time.

But one does have to ask how the self named 'country of the free/brave' tolerates violence in such a way, and that no doubt many may have been looking forward to viewing the video given the way it was pre-announced...

Personally I have no wish to see it as the reports are bad enough, although certain online newspapers have it on an open loop but which can be filtered out.

I always wonder whether the jurors who will have to watch it also become victims of such an outrageous crime to some extent?
 
Goodness only knows what kind of stuff went on pre body cams and the public having cameras in their phones.

Imagine walking up someones drive asking for directions, only to be shot at because you are Scottish.

You need locking up for inciting violence.
