Yes. It is much easier and cheaper to do nothing, and then let people moan, than to fix the system they broke.

But they aren't doing nothing.
A) they're being dishonest when they claim to want to stop the criminal gangs supplying the boats.
They're being dishonest when they express concern for the drowned victims.
They don't give a flying fig about the criminals, and they don't give a flying fig about the safety of the asylum seekers
If they did, an agreement to take a fair share of asylum seekers would remove the market model for criminal boat supply lines.
The fair share would be ferried over by commercial ferry companies. The safety of the asylum seekers would be proteted.
Perhaps other countries would follow suit.

B) they prefer to demonise the asylum seekers, which thye are doing with every word they utter. The vast majority of asylum seekers are legitimate genuine asylum seekers.

At least Starmer is being honest about the issue.

In reality that is all it amounts to, but it is politically dangerous to play that game, we've been discussing stuff with our neighbouring countries for years, and nothing has come of it. People don't trust Europe having swallowed all the brexhit propaganda. His instinct to regulate asylum seekers by sending some back and letting some in, is straight from the eu bureaucracy playbook. If people are genuine let them in, if not keep them out. We need huge investment to resolve the issues.
