Well it’s the festival of speed next week end

All off to good wood to do our bit for climate change

Jeez us lets hope them just stop oil fruit cakes don’t glue them selves to the road or what ever
If they do and
it was left to me they would all get a good duffing up

Sure, but it's the rate of change which is about to bugger us.
EG the Sahara has been moving for a long time, but people move out of the way. Apart from the rapid changes predicted now, we'll get unexpected events akin to the dustbowls US and Australia saw. If an area gets no rain at all for a couple of years, the crops and animals die and the masses are looking for somewhere else to live. Advanced counries could tolerate it to a point, but imagine if that happened to a belt of countries like the 'stans, or part of Africa. Even ENSO (Nino etc) causes major problems for Oz and Chile.
What we don't have is a 'control planet earth' alongside us with no humankind on it, no industrialisation. If we had such a planet and were able to track its environment, as with any good scientific experiment, we'd be able to compare it's temp and other environmental factors, thus determining if there are comparisons with our earth, or if ours has veered off in recent decades.

I don't say that to discount all the scientific evidence that humankind is a contributing factor, I'm simply stating we don't have a control to prove matters almost categorically.

It genuinely doesn't bother me if this is the beginning of the end for us on this planet. I've got ~30 years left if I'm lucky before I peg it. Couldn't care less what happens thereafter. And it can be argued we're nothing but a blight on the landscape for earth itself. If the earth was sentient I'm 100% sure it would be happy to see us extinct.

What makes you think it isn't?
Modern day humans are not good for Mother Earth. The sooner they are gone the better. Trouble is, The West invented greed and consumerism, now the rest of the world want a bite of the apple.

Why just modern humans, greed and sloth have always been traits of the human race.

The awareness of our impact on the environment has become attuned to a growing necessity for a fundamental change in the way we live on this planet. Each generation will face its own challenges in dealing with the past destruction while holding governments to account for our future world security. Greener, cleaner, technology will have a crucial role to play in this transformation from a carbon-reliant industry to one that has a minimal impact on the environment: if the UK decides to dilute its policy then we have only ourselves to blame.

Why just modern humans
Consumerism and post industrial revolution coupled with fossil fuel useage.

Previously, greed would mean one group of people would fight with another group and keep the population down. Similarly, drought and famine are not as catastrophic on the populous, thanks to globalism.

What we don't have is a 'control planet earth'
We don't need one, that's a bit too trite.

We saw high UV levels arriving in Antarctica.
We could have said we didn't know if it could be bad - we don't have a control planet earth.
We saw the ozone hole - oh that's interesting.
20 miles up, probably doesn't matter.
Some chap said it would let UV through - so it does.
UV is known to kill things. Hmm, don't need another planet to tell that.
What would cause that then?
Dunno
Oh, ozone absorbs UV.
What would destroy ozone?
Well there's chlorine - it acts as a catalyst to break down ozone into oxygen, leaving the chlorine.
What could be causing chlorine in the upper atmoshere?
Is there anything man-made.
Oh yeah, CFC's.

DIYNOT plumbers say:-

  • But they're heavier than air.
    They're produced oop north
    So it can't be that
    stands to reason.
    All bollox anyway
    Can't prove it's chlorine
Clever plumber , says chlorine wouldn't settle at the bottom of the world even if it is heavy
    It would be everywhere.
So you think it's going to select Antarctica and hide?
    You're stupid.

Scientists work out why Antarctica could make sense.
Stable atmosphere
cold for longer than anywhere else
Ask diynot plumber about the dissociaton energy of chlorine ions w.r.t. temperature.
Wot?
Never mind, run along.

What about global warmng potential, if, you know, it turns out to matter?
CO2 is 1
methane is 50
CFCs are around 5000-10000

So we banned CFCs in the 80's,
and the ozone hole mended.
and now we can work out it would have caused a 2.5° extra rise by 2100.

No, you don't need another planet.

Does it matter?
Not really.
We'll stuff the planet sooner or later and there will be nobody to care.
