Actually it seems Russia is saying it's at the end of phase one. Phase 2 appears to relate to the bits some thought they were after in the first place.

I wondered when I heard how many troops they used from Belarus. Mentioned on the beeb, 16,000. They also have a problem with Kiev that is a bit like trench warfare of old. Whistle blows and they have to get out of the trenches and advance or get shot for not doing so. Troop losses are high and if they don't get out they''ll loose anyway. So bit like Russia sending loads of soldiers against defended position. Shells aren't that efficient in these situations which is probably why USA mentions using chemicals.

I know, let's say the current stuff we're doing is 'phase 1' and we knew it would go this was all along.
Then we can have as many 'phases' as we need to.

Actually near the end of Phase 1 so maybe some "presents" to come. Why not give them some credit - not enough to take all of Ukraine as many have said.

I'd suspect it is a negotiation war which is rather different. The days of fielding a millions men to over run a country are over. There are countries that could but casualties would be heavy.

Anyway some feel what they want now is firmly on the table. I wonder about the east west dividing river and wanting the east of it. Time will tell but the Crimea aspects have been obvious all along.

How can you draw any conclusions in such a short time frame.

The GREAT, POWERFUL, Russian army. No doubt they thought the taking of Ukraine would be a walk in the park. How wrong they were and are.

What an embarrassment this must be for Putin. I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the stories emerging (that within the Kremlin plans are afoot to oust him one way or another) are true.

Go back to the Winter war, Finland v Russia.
Finland, a country smaller than Ukraine gave Russia a pasting.
Russia's poor performance confirmed Europes generally negative opinions of Russian capabilites.
This is what inspired Hitler to invade Russia
After previously defeating several well resourced armies without breaking a sweat, Hitler thought invading Russia would be straight forward.
His armies weren't just defeated, they were annihilated.

Biden has stated that America wouldn't stand in the way of Ukraine ceding territory to Russia.
Probably the Russian speaking east of the country.
