Vegetarianism

Choice has made us what we are today. When I was young, my parents didn't have a great deal of money, along with most others, and so made the 'classic' meals, mostly from scratch. Now we can buy whatever we like at a decent price, most of it processed, preserved, etc. and stick it in the oven already prepared, or microwave for a couple of minutes. We cycled, or walked, to our friends houses to see if they were in, and if they weren't we went to wherever they were. No mobile phones to call around with. We pretty much walked or cycled everywhere, whereas now, because of all these perverts that have sprung up from nowhere (!) we are frightened to let our kids out of our sight.

Try asking people to revert back to the good old days of cooking cheap decent food from scratch, and see where it gets you. Just ask Jamie Oliver, he has triumphed over most, but people will do what they want to, because of choice :)

I remember when i was a wee one, it was straight to the park from school and we'd play football until it got dark, then there was hide and seek, kick can, never in on weekend walked/cycle everywhere. All that on cornbeef hash.

A lot of food in it's untreated and raw form, would be bland and rather unappealing.
He would argue (like I know him as though he is a close family friend, although he is dead  ) that you have been "brainwashed" into thinking that some food is palatable or bland when in fact it's not. Moreover, he exemplifies this by citing an example which I too have observed as it's not uncommon- if you left an apple on a plate next to a chocolate, then a young child will naturally go for the apple.

True, but there are two things that spring to mind:
1/. You have "learnt" (as in "been conditioned"/"brainwashed")to make certain choices above others
2/. The choices available may not be particularly good. The present "choice" between Lab or Tory reinforces this.

My wife twice a year does a body cleansing type of diet and when she does this I eat the same meals as she does. Oh and no alcohol. The meals are mainly vegetarian. They taste good. It makes more sense than cooking two different meals. The thing that stands out for me is that I sleep realy well, which I don't normally do. When I asked my doctor about this he said that the bodies digestive system can be quite active at night especially when you eat lots of meat late in the day (for me barbecue) causing sleep problems. Makes sense.
