The new guidance for healthcare professionals on compliance with the Abortion Act clarifies:

  • that abortion on the grounds of gender alone is not lawful
  • the expectation that 2 doctors, when certifying that an abortion meets the criteria set out in the Act, must consider the individual circumstances of the woman and be prepared to justify their decision
  • that it is good practice for at least one of the doctors to have seen the pregnant woman before reaching a decision about the termination
  • that pre-signing of statutory abortion certificates prior to consideration of a woman’s circumstances is not compliant with the Act
  • that doctors have a legal duty to report all abortions to the Chief Medical Officer

The purpose of the requirement that two doctors certify the ground(s) for termination is to ensure that the law is being observed; this provides protection for the woman and for the doctors providing the termination7. One of the two certifying doctors may also be the doctor that terminates the pregnancy.

Yep they sign off that in their honest opinion the criteria are met.
thats known as approval

They are not required to approve the request
by signing the form they are approving the abortion can go ahead

the meaning of approval is: "The meaning of APPROVAL is an act or instance of approving something"

yet you maintain the woman needs the approval of two doctors
without doctors signing the form a woman cant have an abortion

Yep they sign off that in their honest opinion the criteria are met. The form is even referred to as a certificate of opinion.
yes indeed

in their honest opinion the criteria has been met

and because of that, they approve the abortion to go ahead by signing the form

if they didnt approve they wouldnt sign

You seem to considering the word approval to mean moral approval, but doctors have no right to make that, if that was the law it would create all sorts of legal problems

You seem to considering the word approval
MBK is embarrassed he's wrong. He's just dancing around the whole two doctors approval thing like a blind boxer. For heavens' sake, the medical profession and even Solicitors journals use the word 'approve' in their text/language. Or perhaps he thinks he's the only one that knows what 'in good faith' means. Dunno?

Just use the word 'certify' and he'll admit he's wrong. (y)

Perhaps you don't understand that there are two separate pieces of legislation governing two separate aspects. Perhaps the chippie, builder and local government officer aren't aware either?

The abortion act covers the exemption criteria

Abortion Act 1967

when a pregnancy is terminated by a registered medical practitioner if two registered medical practitioners are of the opinion, formed in good faith...
What bit are you struggling with ? We can try and explain it again, but it doesn't seen to be going in.

If they of the opinion for it to go ahead, is it verbally accepted? Or what

plenty'? Lol. A few brainwashed obedient drudges
You don't have much respect for women do you.

Those women are probably better educated and more intelligent than you.
They know what a baby is.
That why they believe that killing unborn children is wrong.

And thats why women should have that choice, not men in a forum without any of the reasons or details involved in each individual case

Correct.
No approval from doctors - no abortion.
Why would doctors refuse an abortion if the criteria for one is mental distress.
Any woman who wants to kill her own child is clearly mentally distressed, so how could any doctors refuse permission.

That law was imposed on N.Ireland without consent to appease Sinn Féin.
Not really true of course.

This is the real reason: " United Nations body found in 2018 the UK had breached the rights of women in Northern Ireland, by limiting access to abortions."

Interestingly, in 99.9% of Ground C cases (98.5% of all cases overall) they go with mental health, rather than a physical risk.
Going with the mental health aspect makes it easier to approve an abortion.
Physical risk would be harder to justify.
