I don't care what any of you say, if I could show the soldiers of WW2 during the war that they were fighting for the country we live in today, they'd all drop their guns and go home.

Let's get to the point, soldiers are not heroes, they are killing people that they have no valid cause to kill, they were not conscripted, you cannot use the "my family has an army background" excuse, my father is an engineer but that's not my current profession! Also this rubbish about "what if your son or daughter was out there", my son and daughter are not out there, I will bring them up to be smart enough not to join any of the armed forces, only an idiot would want to wear camouflage, be conditioned like a brainwashed muppet and kill people for a living!

Fighting for your country is something you should do when your country is under attack, a nonsense attack like the 7/7 bombing and the fake WMD report does not justify invading countries, stealing their resources and killing innocent people.

Stop watching the news and look up what you're argueing for before buying your "help the heroes" wrist band and spouting on a forum.

Bizarrely, I completely agree with your first paragraph. It could have been written by me, and I often imagine what servicemen from previous generations who died in conflicts would think about what The UK has become.

Then I realised my we are what we are today. Its's because the country is run and inhabited by an increasing proportion of muppets like you. I'm not going to get into a big cyber argument with you, because it would give you a purpose to your life.

However, on one point of yours , I am completely lost. You seem to imagine that we can exist without a regular army, and that in the event of someone threatening our national interest or even planning to attack us, we can quickly cobble together batallions of conscripts to fight and become 'heroes'. Also, what about the deterrent effect of having a strong retained regular army?

There was a joke before the first world war, by Bismark that said if the English army landed on mainland europe, that he would have the police arrest it.

The BEF was tiny. Almost half of our force size now...and this is when to win wars you need personel with rifles...

AS for showing the veterans of ww 2, ill think youll find most of them were a lot more tolerant than you obviously are, and stood shoulder to shoulder with all sorts of people from other countries, who had turned up at our shores. No-one in their everyday job is a hero. I served in the army and the police. neither of those made me a hero or anyone else in their everyday role. Sometimes, people go beyond what is expected of them, and someday people go way beyond what is expected of them out of a sense of duty to whatever cause they feel is right and believe in. I think youll find there are a lot of camouflaged idiots of all ranks that have served in all services of the forces who are far from idiots, and a damn site smarter than you could hope to be.

Yes you should fight when your country is under attack (would you as youre so anti-british), but also when you sign the dotted line and your sent there by politician who are voted in by the british public, then you go and you do the job you are asked. What resources have been stolen from afghanistan? A statement like that shows a complete lack of understanding inwhat they are doing

Take a look at selly oak or at headly rehab centre and see the mess some of these guys are in. Thats what the help for heroes is for. WHen i see a 19 year old who has had 2 legs and his arm blown off, but still wants to get the most out of his life then that is the meaning of a hero, dealing with that and the demons that go with it everyday.

The guy isn't a hero, he is an idiot! So running into gunfire is a smart idea is it? this somewhat ruins your claims that they are all smart then doesn't it? A hero is someone who dives infront of a bus to save a child from being run over and loses his/her life in the process or a civilian passing by a burning house and rescueing the occupants, the thing these people have in common is that they didn't choose this as a career path, nobody asked them to do it, it's a purely unselfish act for the benefit of others.

I have been informed by a former soldier that he would sometimes have to send one of his soldiers into a high risk biological hazard area without breathing apparatus because the whole troop didn't have the gas masks and they'd know if it was safe to proceed if the soldier died or came back?!! So teaching someone to go and kill themselves to save other soldiers isn't brainwashing?

I'm anti invading everyones country for illegal reasons and stealing their resources, aren't you? Do you believe the answer to all international disagreements is to just invade them? Would soldiers who invade our country and shoot civilians just to get hold of resources be heroes? Are you aware that their soldiers are other peoples sons and daughters? so it's alright for their sons and daughters to be wiped out by ours? Has it occured to you that we are fighting a "war on terror" yet all the suicide bombers that were alledgedly involved in the 7/7 bombings were home grown? I bet you're one of these cowards that sh*ts the bed everytime you're told that those nasty muslims are out to get us!

To sum up, I'm all for having an army, navy, RAF etc but I'm also for not celebrating people who are just doing their job! You may join the army for many reasons, I personally think you must be missing a few screws if you believe a career in killing people is brave.

IQ in the forces... there is just about the complete range of roles, skills and abilities in the armed forces, so any measure of IQ is hardly relevant.

And our armed forces are heroes, not because they're fighting in Afghanistan (in a war a lot of people disagree with), but they're heroes because they choose to train and be prepared to put their lives on the line in any situation that arises in the future, mainly to defend the sorry ar5e5 of the type of people who think it's right to scream abuse at them when they come home

You're missing the point as why they do it, they dont have a say in where they go, its a political matter which i'm not going to get into , the fact is they do it regardless. They are being killed, injured fighting for their country. There are young lads in hospitals all over the country missing arms, legs, brain damaged etc etc.....they dont complain and they try to build there lives the best way they can. They are heros for that reason alone. I am not saying the moment you become a soldier your are a hero, but the majority of these service men and women do heroic acts, rebuilding their lives is a main one.
