What have you been doing today?

I woke up at 2:30, couldn't get back to sleep, so I got up watched Vasa:Ghost Ship, which was one I mistakenly thought I had seen before, but no - same ship, different bit of film about it. Still not tired, after which, I asked the dog if she fancied a walk - so spent an hour with her, her wondering free, off lead, just following her where ever she wanted to go. In the process, I/we found a new shortcut, that I wasn't aware of.

Fitting a longer lead to the mower.

I got a SH mower lead from someone at the tip (and had another argument with one of the staff who insisted what I was being handed was their property. Cue the discussion about the item never touching the floor and even if it did, would that make ownership of all the cars theirs? That's ridiculous... Exactly, you see my POV now?). That should help, as once that is done we will be able to mow the front lawn and the strip next to the pavement without an extension lead. I want to put a couple of Masterseal sockets in the back garden. Once the lawnmower has its new lead fitted, I will work out if we can cover the whole back lawn without an extension lead, using two strategically placed sockets. That's a huge part of the hassle, running out and putting away a lead for the mower. I'm quite a fan of battery powered things like power tools and cars, but I have never known anyone have great success with a cordless lawnmower or a cordless vacuum cleaner. I inherited a Bosch cordless hedge trimmer a few years ago and it was atrocious.i thought it was dud batteries, so I bought a brand new one. It was still awful, so the whole lot got thrown in the recycling skip. We could get a petrol mower (my ideal) but Mrs S worries about storing petrol in the shed.

We have a few battery items here, and they do have their place. Couple of battery drills, plus an sds, stairlift, mobility scooter, and of course the phones - all seem to work well enough, but where possible, they are backed up by mains versions.

We were woken at 3:30am, by lots of alarms sounding - stairlift, linked fire alarm, landline phones complaining, heating coming on and gentle creaking of the pipes, plus various burglar alarms in the street and further afield sounding. I looked out, and all the street lights were off, but soon the came back on, so I reset the boilers time - If the boiler loses power, it forgets it's date/time, so it runs on 23C.

With the power back, I reset the date/time, all quiet, I went back to bed, just in time for the power to go off again. This time, I turned the stairlift off, the boiler off, and left it all until this morning. All now set back to normal.

After the 'update' on my WiFi enabled combination oven went wonky on me by putting itself into demo mode, I’ve been unable to use it. I tried to cancel it how it says in the manual - no joy. I tried how it says on the Neff helpline - no joy, I tried several methods I found on the internet - no joy. I just couldn’t get the 'demo mode' option up to turn it off. I phoned up Neff and they told me to do the same as the manual says. While I was trying this, I mentioned that I couldn’t get to the demo mode programme. The smug git said "that’s because there isn’t one on that model". Just as he said that, and bearing in mind I'd tried the same thing six times at least, up popped the 'Demo mode' option! I cancelled the demo mode and it’s all good now. Ended the call with him thanking me.

Watched this the other night, my kind of tv prog over the usual dross. Amazing preservation thanks to a number of factors.

Yes, so it seemed, much better than the Mary Rose, which suffered almost exactly the same fate. I was quite surprised by the program suggesting that rather than design the ships, they more or less built them from experience alone, and hope that they float - that they didn't really understand 'displacement', and stability. Archimedes understood displacement, many centuries before...

Yes agreed. I suppose in their own way they did understand. The sneaky (captain?) who told the 30 sailors to stop running backwards and forwards after three times because the ship was at risk of keeling over! That alone should have been a major indication. I think the powers that be probably knew it wasn't really seaworthy.

But they dare not mention the instability, to the king :)

Jaysus! WIFI enabled oven? I fear people are getting over reliant on tech and over complicating things. Must take a lot of time reading manuals for all the 'smart' devices with 100s of functions destined never to be used.
