On the wider point, I think many (most?) of the general public are probably quite ignorant when it comes to labs across the world and the stuff they're working on. It's a cliché to say it but it's quite concerning when you think about it ... so you're probably better not and just getting on with the day to day.

The 2011 movie Contagion was on a few nights back, ok it's a movie and how good/bad it is can be debated, however the number of similarities between it and our recent experiences with Covid were noticeable.

Very true. Stupid modern films were a major part of why people were so frightened of covid... it's not that the films were similar to covid, more like covid was similar to the films. There is a generation brought up in the fear that a disease is going to come along and wipe us all out, the same generation brought up on computer games.
