As Gaza’s official death toll passes 40,000 – including about 14,000 children – Israeli newspaper Haaretz points out that this represents a higher proportion of the prewar population killed in 10 months than were killed in the Iraq war over 20 years, or in the Yugoslav wars over 10 years; and it’s four times the proportion of people killed in Ukraine over two-and-a-half years.
