Why do parents of today seem so obsessed with getting their offspring to university. For a large percentage of undergraduates it just means unemployment after three years of study......they'd be better of getting a degree in life.

Chances of getting ANY job are getting slimmer and slimmer. My own view point is you may as well have a degree that MIGHT get you a better job later on than not have a degree and wish you'd done it years ago, later on.

Which would be? oh I know lets find a job thats not there at the moment and get on the gravy train of benefits.Neither the wife or I are obssessed with uni, my daughter is the one who has put the hard work and study in she is the one who is going to come out with debts up to the eye balls and is quite prepared for it.I left school way back in the seventies at the age of of 15 with bugger all in qualifications worked hard all my life so far but doing shifts ie,nights and weekends bit of a dead end job really and if my daughter and thousands like her can work their way to better employment prospects than mine and no doubt others aswell then a bit of "obsession" is probaly justified.

What a great reply and so true. I went self employed about 17 years ago whilst still working 12 hours shifts. I spent every hour that I could working, grabbing some kip and food, then working again.
If todays youngsters can work to the same kind of ethics, if and when possible and gain the employment / recognition that they deserve, then every due respect to them.
The problem as I see it is if they gain the qualifications, will there be a job for them after uni?
This country seems to want graduates, but only at a price.

It's your daughters choice to go off to university and pick up the debts that go with that choice. That sort of illustrates the issue I am trying to raise, that is there is this 'obsession' with higher education.

It has become a vocation in itself. I opinion that the attraction is not so much the education but the seemingly attractive lifestyle that goes with it. The almost compulsory 'gap' year will no doubt add to your daughters debt.

The truth of the matter is that graduates are now being sought for even bottom of the rung sales positions even cold calling domestic properties.
Without a degree the chance of gaining any employment likely to bring in 20k is virtually nil other than having two jobs and working all hours.

More work needs to be done by schools though at a much earlier stage to try and create careers paths and goals. Would be architects or professionals are doing pointless degrees leading to disaffection and settling for lower paid employment.
My children recieved no career advice at all but to be fair the current labour market has very little to offer other than telesales or customer service positions. Jobs in engineering or manufacturing are sparse and graduate engineers are even sparser.

Why do I get the impression that you are jealous?

Why do I get the impression that you are jealous?

Jealous of what? I have a public school education, a degree and my kids likewise.............so the 'J' word does not apply. I just see parents pressurised trying to live their lives through the academic achievements of their kids.

Try talking to the average parent about your childs achievements....chances are they will quickly want to talk about their kids achievements....they talk but don't listen.....they are as I say obsessed with their own childs achievemnts and couldn't give a monkeys about yours.

Am I correct or am I correct

Then mind your own business and let others get on with it. Public school - worra plonka.

You and your kids have a degree and you question other parents?

So 'I'm alright Jack'?

WHAT is your point exactly Mr Public School Boy?

Yours have been bought have they,I can see you now looking down your nose at some one from the lower classes having the affront to want to better themselves, go stand in the corner and hob nob with Dave and George they don't have a clue either.

For a large percentage of undergraduates it just means unemployment after three years of study...

More like a small percentage of people who do these daft degrees like Art or Soil Development and Usage (Ok, I made the second one up) but I don't really know any unemployed lawyers or accountants

The first point I would make is you belittle your contribution by childish name calling.
The point I am raising, and it is only an opinion, is that parents see university education as the be all and end all and quite honestly it isn't.

So pray tell what your degree is in and what leads you to this conclusion.

Well there you go......don't make assumptions it can get you into trouble. You may be interested to know that my public education was by way of a scholarship for underprivaleged kids.....so no, my education was not bought, quite the opposite in fact. And you can't get more working class than living all your life on a council estate in Dudley.
