A COVID 19 fiasco

What utter *******s. Masks help stop it spreading. The science is not only proven but also very easy to understand, so stop denying it.

  • WHO officials do not recommend mask wearing for healthy members of the general population.
  • Masks should be worn by those with the disease or those in close contact with those infected.

As people can be without symptoms for weeks be carry and spread it, this means you have to assume that you and everybody else might have it. Therefore, wear a mask.

and also ...

5,810 Swedes have died of COVID-19 (Sky News)
Population of Sweden: 10.23 million
1 death per 1760 people

41,423 Brits have died
Population of UK: 66.65 million
1 death per 1609 people

That is a very similar death rate than the UK.

While more people have died of Covid-19 per capita in Sweden than in many other countries, the outbreak of the disease did not crush the nation’s health care system and overload its intensive care units as predicted.

You seem to be as bad as Bobby at understanding what people write.

That is not a theory or the theory.
What you say is true but the point being made is that smokers are less likely to get covid.

I have no idea whether that is correct or not.
In summary and based on the available evidence, it seems unlikely that smoking offers some degree of protection from the effects of COVID-19. The ONS report1 shows that smoking rates are the lowest at 7.9% in those 65 years and over and it is possible that the lower incidence of infection among smokers, simply reflects the fact that fewer older people smoke rather than an intrinsic and protective effect among smokers. Until more definitive evidence emerges, it would seem prudent that current healthcare advice to stop smoking is continued rather than patients relying on a potentially spurious belief that somehow smoking will prevent them from becoming infected with COVID-19.
That theory?

Prime example of people only wanting to hear what they want to hear.
You've been told this is out of date advice and shown the new advice in other threads but you refuse to take it on board!

So, what unexpected surprise happened to change their minds?

Advice cannot be out of date for things that haven't changed. Why, then were the WHO wrong before - if that is what you think.

I know you think it obvious that something over the nose and mouth will stop things going in but why did the WHO not think this?

It's exactly the changing contradictory advice which makes people sceptical.

It's not good enough to say the virus is new; it's a virus.

The biggest part was discovering that asymptomatic people were able to transmit it. That's not always, or even normally true for viruses. That changed the advice from 'wear a mask if you've got symptoms' to 'wear a mask more often'.

Exactly. Thankyou.

The advice about trying to protect others is sound and stop the spread so bad is sound.
The new information coming with this virus is that even the wearer benefits. The viral load is less, making the illness less severe for the person who caught it while wearing a mask.

I don't understand why people fight this so much. This IS a new virus, one where information will change while we learn more about it.

I'm sorry but you must stop posting that shyte. I've told you this before:

".....WHO advises that governments should encourage the use of non-medical fabric masks, which can act as a barrier to prevent the spread of the virus from the wearer to others where there are many cases of COVID-19, for people in the general public where physical distancing of at least 1 metre is not possible – such as, on public transport, in shops or in other confined or crowded environments."

Only applicable where there are "many cases" of Covid-19.
Round my way there are none.
So the March advice still stands as far as Iam concerned.
And most other people I see are adopting the same stance.

The WHO changed their guidance because 200-odd scientists wrote an open letter to them, telling them to advise the wearing of face coverings.
