if the conveyor and the wheels are both moving at the same speed but in opposite directs, the plane must be stationary. It cannot be moving forward at 1 mph

If the plane is not moving, then it can only be the conveyor turning the wheels, we know this is not true, as the conveyor is only allowed to match the wheel speed, not create it.

The plane must move forward to generate a wheel speed for the conveyor to respond to.

Remember the wheels are freewheeling, and in theory can do any speed they wish. But they will not have any effect on the speed of the plane as this is decided only by its jet engines. These work on Newtons 3rd law of motion, equal and opposite reaction, the jet engine goes one way while the exhaust gases go the other, relative to a fixed point.

If the plane was stationary the belt would not need to move.

What the question says is not possible. the question is wong and describes something which cannot happen.

Its an impossible scenario.

Fact: Thrust, if sufficient, must move the aircraft forward.

Fact: A conveyor belt moving in the opposite direction, at the exact same speed as the wheels of a vehicle on that belt will result in that vehicle not moving, regardless of the speed of the wheels and belt. Its like a rolling road at Qwikfit.

The above 2 facts cannot be reconciled into a single scenario. There are not even 2 possible answers to the single quoted question because it is not a possible question. It is no more than a string of words in a sentence with a question mark at the end.
 
Then it's clear that, as with many threads on the site, we have reached an impasse where those who believe that the aircraft will fly cannot convince those who feel it will not and vice versa.

Only if the belt moves at any different independant speed, in either direction, but not if it is exactly the same in the opposite direction. Even 00.01 Kt different speed will create a scenario for your answer, which is correct, but the question doesn't give you that tolerance. You are answering an impossible question.
 
Next time I happen to departing from an airport with a conveyor belt for a runway I'll let you all know how I get on. ;)
 
But hang on a moment. The aircraft is on a moving conveyor belt. The earth is rotating so the runway is a moving conveyor belt.

That is the answer for east -west runways where the conveyor runway is moving in or directly opposite to the line of flight.

But what is the answer for north south runways where the conveyor is going sideways to the aircrafts line of flight.
