LAL bangs on endlessly about democracy...Then thinks it perfectly acceptable for a mob to tear down any item it considers offensive in our streets..Exposed for being completely stupid.
A slave trader statue is seen as offensive to many.
Tell me, did you have a problem with Saddam Hussein's statue being torn down?

Times move on, vast majority of people do not wish to celebrate people who are now considered quite monstrous by today's higher standards. I don't think history should ever be forgotten but I totally understand why people no longer wish to have statues of these people around.

Would it not have been better to remove it from general public view and put it in a museum with explanations of slavery etc. Like many people im uncomfortable with erasing history however repugnant it is by todays standards. You cant learn from history if you erase it.

There have been discussions, within the council, about removing it for quite a while.
I guess the protesters became impatient with the discussions.
He was a substantial philanthropist to the Council.

"Historic England has said it does not believe the statue of Edward Colston which was toppled and thrown in to Bristol Harbour "must be reinstated"."

they have tried to get the plaque changed, but got turned down

This is what it says:

"Erected by citizens of Bristol as a memorial of one of the most virtuous and wise sons of their city AD 1895"

So just bypass courts and rip everything down.I find cars parked on cycling lanes utterly offensive,,I think I will torch them all.I have complained to council and police, nothing happened,so it is my right and civic duty!!!!

whilst I agree, sometimes only protests and riots bring about social change.

Hussein's statue was torn down by an invading power whilst at war, is that how you see these protests?

Inappropriate statues should be removed through democracy not by mob rule. Bristol have had a black mayor for the last 4 years, you can hardly say the statue was there because of lack of political representation within Bristol.

"
BME people make up around 13 per cent of Bristol, according to the 2011 census, making it one of the most diverse cities in the UK."
But the area's public sector - as well as many private industries - have often failed to reflect the city’s unique mix of ethnicities."

Yes I agree, however I understand why they did it though I don't condone it.
Done now, I don't think anyone will really miss the statue..
