I'm not trying to walk you into any sort of trap. I was just really surprised at the strength of feeling about this term. It had always seemed to just be a bit of silly fun to me. When @Bod ... commented on my original post, I thought he was pulling me up for mentioning the death penalty, not using the word gammon. So far, nobody has really tried to explain why it is so offensive.

Your posts are balanced and not grubby like elle Notch, Nosey or the man with many names.

They say it to be offensive, and because it's a forum we can't see their skin colour si they believe they can get away with it.

I think you an educated man. Do you honestly believe a black man calling a white man a Gammon is not offensive. Really there is no need to explain why Gammon is offensive same as we don't need to explain why tye N word is offensive. So from now on I think it's safe to just call it the G word. Not to be confused with the G spot.

But white people as a whole aren't being called gammons. It refers to somebody who gets angry and goes red in the face when thinking about certain subjects. To me it's about attitudes and disposition.

If he used it as a generic term for any white person, then yes, that would be racist. But that's not what gammon means, as far as I can see.

It is almost exclusively used by white people about other white people. And it refers to people with certain attitudes and temperaments.

Have we looked at how badly planned this proposal is? Two days before Rishi announced it there was a reply on the topic of national service by a defense minister pointing out it's a terrible idea.

Now we find out they don't even know what the benefits or repercussions of failing to take part in your community service will be.

But when there's an election this gets made up and released two days later. More evidence of a complete lack of planning by the Tories?

I don't understand that whole dynamic and it doesn't seem very relevant to what we are discussing.

The gammon thing, certainly in the way I used it, is purely about making fun of a certain sort of person who goes red in the face when they get worked up about particular subjects.

I have particular enjoyed the Brexit argument - we are not paying the EU,,, when actually we have bumped up our payment to £19.5 billion a year, which we all now pay via import export costs...to be laughable.

By the way we now stand at a total cost of £160 billion for our exit...and are due to pay this year £23 billion... Still got a blue passport made in Poland and designed in France so can't be all bad. Oh and we still have to take some 3940 EU rules and laws...becuase unless we do we cannot trade with them...

On the subject of gammon - its always offensive, as it reminds the right wing brexit voters what they are, but seeing as they are not a distinct race its not racist, just offensive.
