The sheer numbers of potential casualties suggests that several rescue boats would be needed. If that were a valid argument it would support them not being there at all.
How many casualties can one rescue boat rescue?

As things stand even the libdems would do a better jobAnd replace them with exactly which bunch of rabble?
Seafarers worldwide save fellow mariners regardless of nationality.
Not small, not overcrowdedUnfortunately we don’t live in that world.
We live on a small over crowded island with apparently crumbling and overstretched public resources that have to cope with 3/4M more people each year.
And you only have to look at the nationalities of the illegals to know that they aren’t refugees. They may be able to argue asylum by fleeing other kinds of persecution. But not refugees as per the intent of the convention.

Blup
Governments all over the world (not just western) need to reassess the whole migration thing. Anybody with more than 3 brain cells knows this issue is not going anywhere, it's only going to escalate. Listening to politicians spout their guff (whilst pointing with their thumb) saying 'we need to get tough on the criminals who profit from this' so how's that's going? I'll tell you how far they'll get with that. Nowhere. The same with the 'war on drugs' how's that going? Governments are incapable of stopping those at the top and in the rare cases when they do, others will rapidly take the place of those caught.I think it goes wider afield, I don't think western governments can carry on like they've been used to, if they do they're on a road to nowhere. Que song.
Just the sort of climber/walker that needs rescuing from time to time. If you need help you need help. Don’t assume that people in a dinghy in the channel are illegal immigrantsNo comment on the morality of the issue, but to call the trafficked "mariners" is a stretch.
I've got a collection of RAB gear and have walked in the hills, but it don't make me a mountaineer.
I agree the migration issue needs addressed, I disagree it's the main (or anywhere near the main) issue with regard to issues with our public services, housing etc. That's not to say it's not a contributing factor, of course it is, however the main reason is mismanagement and sh1t longer term strategy from government ... who are quite happy to deflect the causes to things like migrants.Unfortunately we don’t live in that world.

I haven't seen any for ages in the UK, they'd be well lost to come across me, but I've seen them a lot in the med. The process in the Med is different. Hellenic coast guard will get very p**ed off if you help them unless people are actually in the water. You call in their location and they send out a couple of military ribs to "help" them back to Turkey.Just the sort of climber/walker that needs rescuing from time to time. And it's their only route here. They aren't nuts, they're desperate
