Does my van need adblue?

Damn. My mechanic said he changed it in the summer. Shall I definitely get it changed again?
He might well be telling the truth. Some diesels will "black their oil" very quickly after a change - within a few hundred miles. As Burnerman says, it doesn't really affect the lubricating properties.

You can't tell the quality of the oil by looking at a discoloured dipstick - especially on the older diesels.
Maintain the oil level at all times and have it changed, with a filter, every 6k miles.
John :)

Ok. Is level ok looking at dipstick?

Diesel oil goes pretty much black immediately after a fresh oil change.

It's a common issue of people not believing the garage has changed their oil after service, as there is little visual way to tell.

As an experiment a mechanic online did oil changes on a diesel until the oil ran clear.....it took many flushes.

So as long as the oil is not sludgy or lumpy, it's hard to tell if it's been changed unless you watch them.

Looks like the oil level is bang on the mark for what it should be.
