Fruit and veg ‘will run out’ unless Britain charters planes to fly in farm workers from Europe

They travel many miles each year and many stay in the farm accommodation as you say

seasonal, nomadic lifestyle isnt suitable for many people.

how would somebody that has a council house afford to go and then pay to rent locally to the farm?

have a legit reason to say no,
I would be very interested in what you think constitutes a legit reason for refusing a job...If nothing else,,people should be litter picking for their benefits, keep them fit...

so how many fruit farms are within realistic driving distance

bearing in mind work is very seasonal, pickers move from farm to farm as crops become ready.

as usual you think you have the answers, but you are clueless

Would you give a person in a wheel chair a job cleaning a block of flats that only has stairs? Or a lifeguard job to someone who can't swim? Or perhaps a sex offender a job in a school... or a bloke with no driving license a job on a farm 60 miles away and no public transport.. The list is probably quite long.
The job center actually is supposed to match a person a job that is within their skill-set. Makes sense to me. Jobs that people are not suitable wastes employers time too as they'd simply fire them.

Am with you on litter picking - perhaps not just that but voluntary work would be a nice touch. Not every day as people do need some time to find work, but a day or two a week to help those in the UK is a nice idea.

Fruit farmers have to pay min wage. If you know farmers who don't and take the p out of these people then report them!

Absolutely agree, all about the margins.

Mr Sainsbury puts the tender out...
Farmer A bids low but wait he's outbid by farmer B hmm how's he managed that, aha foreign pickers (kicks out english workers drops salary through the floor comes back with lower bid)
Wait we haven't got pickers because we pushed our prices through the floor to please Mr Sainsbury and his healthy profit margins.

The fruit left unpicked in these parts was due to the low prices being paid for it. Cheaper to leave it for the birds than the vultures that buy for the supermarkets. Oh, and G's Shropshire whining about a lack of workers is trying to renegotiate costs with its labour suppliers and is upset that the labour is being sent where the money is.
