Well, speaking as the son of a farmer who used to produce vegetables, the problem is that often these workers are nothing short of slave labour brought in by gang masters who are paid by the farmer, the gang masters then pay the “self-employed” workers whatever they choose, hence we get cheap labour.

farmers will not pay the price required by legit British workers. My son found this out whilst at Uni, he approach two local farms during one summer only to be told No, we get our people from East Europe cheaper.

it just goes to show free markets create inequality.

supermarkets are driven by shareholder profits, they wont pay the right price for farm goods and they squeeze farmers who then cant pay a fair wage.

I am not advocating socialism, just that wealth should be better spread around.
