Sorry Joe,,, JohnD is insisting we keep it strictly smoking, so your question is null and void.  (he can't see the bigger picture)

This is a thread about smoking

By all means go and start your own thread about drinking and sunbeds.

Your attempt to distract attention from tobacco addiction, just because you are sympathetic to it, is transparent and worthless.

Oh .. okay, strictly within the bounds of smoking then ... you know when you mentioned celebrities glamourizing smoking? I've found a famous anti-smoking campaigner you'll like. You seem as equally zealous.

Hitler.
The state performer in antismoking propaganda was Adolf Hitler. As one magazine put it: "brother national socialist, do you know that our Führer is against smoking and think that every German is responsible to the whole people for all his deeds and emissions, and does not have the right to damage his body with drugs?"

He abhorred it ... and even became anti-drinking. The rest is history, as they say.
Something to do with attaining the perfect race and ridding the world of the rest of the flotsam.

All I have said is that I want to prevent the tobacco trade from recruiting more children to fill the empty shoes of their dying customers

1) Are you in favour of children being encouraged to take up smoking?

2) Are you under the impression that I have advocated something else?

OK I'll read between the lines for you.

What you have said is that you don't want anyone exercising their right to do something that's perfectly legal (at the moment)
Take this one step further, and you'll advocate a total ban.
All I have said is that this would be the thin end of a very big wedge.

What you are doing is focusing solely on smoking and excluding any other vices and habits that are also considered unhealthy.... as well as making it sound like smokers go out recruiting innocent victims ...
To answer your first question, don't be silly, but oddly, it wasn't so many years back that the goverment relaxed licensing laws to allow kiddies in pubs.

What I'm saying is if there is enough information available to educate people of the risks of smoking or drinking ... from thereon it's the individuals free choice and not for a goverment to start price hiking and legislating and advocating bans.

What John D is doing is focusing on is Smoking and Children

He forgets that we are all somebody's child and children do indeed grow up.
I wouldn't say someone who's 18 yrs old is a child.
He deliberately chooses his words so we don't think of people in their late teens /early twenties.

Lines my arse.

it is not legal to sell tobacco to people under 18; it is not legal for children under 16 to possess it.

You may be surprised and shocked to hear that many lifelong smokers took up the habit when they were still children at school. How old were you?

As I have told you in a previous reply, I started smoking at the age of 18.
The original post was purely about smoking,,,,, not children and smoking. You were the one that brought children into the equation. Read my previous post
He forgets that we are all somebody's child and children do indeed grow up.

What is actually wrong with phasing out (not banning) tobacco?

How many of you smokers actually WANT to smoke, i.e. would you want to be an addict if a magic wand could be waved and you were cured?

Would you be against tobacco becoming less widely available in the future?

It has no use unlike drugs and alcohol so why not phase it out?

I have not mentioned price hiking and I have not advocated a ban, except on acts which have the effect of recruiting children to be the next generation of addicts. Do you think that I have, or is that just an unsubstantiated smear?

Obviously, advertising, marketing, sponsorship and portraying a glamorous or desirable lifestyle are among the acts intended to recruit the next generation of smokers..

You have chosen to avoid my point (2)

...making it sound like smokers go out recruiting innocent victims

No, I have repeatedly said that it is the tobacco industry that has to keep recruiting new young smokers to replace the old ones that die. Read it again and see if I have said smokers. Is that just an another unsubstantiated smear?

Ahh I see, it's now Young Smokers as opposed to Children

Make your mind up. ;) ;)

Do you think that children are not young, or are you just being silly?
