Good riddance tobacco!

It controlled me.

If I was out of fags and cash I'd pick up dog ends from the street just in case I couldn't find an ATM or a shop open. Smoked a few as well.

No free will when nicotine has it's claws in you.

I remember looking into a snooker hall when I was very young it was so seductive dark environment low lighting over green baise and a smoke cloud hovering around head height, no extractor fan in those days, I had no feelings of danger from that environment and no one told you any better my dad said don't go to those places they are full of villans plotting crimes,I don't think there would have been any leaders of the tobacco industry in there

Jeez. Is this still running?

Anyhow, looks like governments in US, Europe, Australia are trying to turn people off of cigarettes via the introduction of Fire Safe Cigarettes (FSCs). Been law in many states since 2004, and now law in Europe from this year.

These things have extra bands of paper inside the paper of the cigarette, and EVA carpet glue!!! to put them out if you don't keep drawing on them. They don't taste too good anyway. So, looks like the health nazis will get their way, against the free choice of millions of people.

Governments, governments never change.

Article on Prohibition said:
Frustrated that people continued to consume so much alcohol even after it was banned, federal officials had decided to try a different kind of enforcement. They ordered the poisoning of industrial alcohols manufactured in the United States, products regularly stolen by bootleggers and resold as drinkable spirits. The idea was to scare people into giving up illicit drinking. Instead, by the time Prohibition ended in 1933, the federal poisoning program, by some estimates, had killed at least 10,000 people.

Irrelevant, except perhaps in the distorted mind of an addict.

If you were truly concerned about saving the lives of tobacco addicts, you would be trying to find ways to prevent new ones being recruited to form the next generation of smokers.

Why don't you actually discuss these methods then JohnD, instead of rubbishing everyone posts like a bad troll.

Why don't you join the discussion, rather than standing at the sidelines going "Boooo Booooo, rubbish Boooo".

Just keep putting the price up and have a mandatory 10 year prison sentences for smuggling.

Don't be silly, Aron.

1) I have repeatedly expressed my opinion that the continuation of this vile but profitable trade is due to the industry constantly recruiting new young smokers to refill the ranks of addicts to replace the ones who die.

2) I have repeatedly expressed my opinion that the best way to do that is to attack the means by which children and young people are recruited to the addiction.

The pro-smoking lobby has dishonestly pretended that a ban is suggested; that people not in favour of children taking up smoking are nazis; that the prevention of recruiting children is a curb on free speech; that smoking doesn't matter because there are some other things in the world that also need fixing; that Hitler was anti-smoking and that therefore anti-smokers must be like Hitler and now some idiot suggests that methylated spirits (which are dangerous to health) means that the government intends to add poison to cigarettes..

Where's your debate? Do you you want to disagree with either of my two key points?

You can't argue against addiction, John. That's why they are addicts. Their free will has been removed.

And let's not forget we're a thick underclass as well Joe!

Aron ... give in to their moral superiority. Let them have their day. They'll soon scuttle back into hiding when the goverment selects their next target.

Do you want to know a little story? No .. don't bother reading on then.
But not so long back I was standing at the bus stop (I don't drive! Does that earn me a brownie point to counter-weigh on the Scales of Justice?).
Anyway... I was standing about 10 foot away from the shelter, and a woman walked past me to read the bus timetable. She put a hand over her face and pinched her nostrils with her nose in the air, and gave me a dirty look.
So I just asked her ... 'What about breathing in all the exhaust fumes then?'
She said, 'They don't bother me.'
Oh ... she was a tad overweight too.

And that is the growing general attitude, a bit like on this thread where smokers are dubbed dumb and an underclass. There will always be a flock of sheep who fall into line and do the goverments crusading for them without considering the implications or the larger picture... until it's focused onto something they happen to do.

Just keep putting the price up and have a mandatory 10 year prison sentences for smuggling.

If you put the price up that means less money for things like food and when given the choice between eating and smoking Id always go hungry. cigarette smokers have children

Where's your debate?

Where is yours?

I still don't see any proposals from you, actual proposals, actual measures, and not generic "stop them recruiting children".

Come on, put your money where you mouth is and actually say what should be done, so far all you have done is listed things that are already illegal, and come up with plain packaging, something I have pointed out flaws to (which you refused to discuses).

Come on JohnD, debate the issue.

So increase the attractiveness of smuggling, and increase the sentences for smuggling, because the latter has been soooooo effective at stopping drug smuggling and criminal gangs.

Why do you want to support criminal gangs Joe, are you a smuggler?

No but I know a few and they aren't the least bit afraid of the law as it stands. Our local pound shop has been raided umpteenth times.

Or ...
Stop increasing the price. In fact ... remove all the revenue and make smokers pay for their own health care for smoking related diseases. (even though technically we're already paying or it through Income Tax and National Insurance).
If only half of smokers die from a smoking related disease some of us might actually end up in profit.
The anti-smoking lobby should like that one if they believe we're a drain on the NHS and it'll help alleviate the smuggling problem too.
Then they could do the same for druggies, fat people and alcohol.
Fat people are paying nothing towards their care and it's not really feasible to tax food in the supermarkets.
That's how to educate the younger generation to a healthier lifestyle.
Education and fiscal penalties.

Get sport back in the schools and educate the kids. If you want to kill yourself that's all fine and dandy.
