When J K Rowling expresses empathy with trans people she writes things like that “trans people need and deserve protection” or “I want trans women to be safe” — she aleays follows it up with some form of “but”. She draws a thick line between trans women and all other women.
She may dislike the label, but she shares the gender-essentialist view at its core: that womanhood is fixed, intrinsic, and anatomically determined.
Her empathy is disingenuous.
