just under 300 boats detected since the new rules came in. ...

Just because bob gets off, doesn't mean you will
Remind us: did the government campaign on stopping the boats?
Or did they say they would slightly reduce the number?
Or did they say that they can't stop the boats, so they're going to criminalise all the asylum seekers, and put some of them in prison for a few months?
Or did they say they can't stop the boats, but they're not going to grant any of them asylum, and they'll accomodate them anyway, somehow, spending £zillions in the process? And waste more £zillions in the UK and EU legal systems?

Indeed. But most people realise it’s complex and difficult. Tackling organised crime always is.

and yet nobody can say how many claimants there will be each year, if that approach is adopted.

Well, no. so what? Deal with it as it arises. The vast majority who are processed are granted protection anyway. Imagine doing that elsewhere. There would be no boat problem.

Albanian men are the largest single source of illegal immigrants via small boat. Only 13% are granted asylum. Questions are also being asked why the UK seems to have such a high acceptance rate, possibly the highest in Europe? I think changes are coming.

Thanks for this.
We already knew how inefficient, lethargic, random, expensive, potentially prejudiced and protracted the UK Asylum system is.
Now a Parliamentary commission has given us an insight into how ineffective and sexist it is:
"Nine countries, including Germany, accepted no asylum claims from Albania. The Home Office must explain why the UK’s acceptance rate was so high, particularly compared to other countries. It must also explain why the acceptance rate is substantially higher for women (88%) than for men (13%). "

It's this that so many fail to accept and understand, but think we can cure the system by pretending its somebody else's fault
