That's called a swadger I think[/quote

a swadger to me is the tool we used to use to form the internal ring in the wall of the old kingley/kingsley fittings which was instead of an olive, i remember as an apprentice getting slapped for forming the ring in the pipe but NOT putting the nut on the pipe first, making it useless haha, i used to use a drift to form a socket although this wasnt really the right tool either as this was for a specific fitting as well which had a big cone which sat in the end of the pipe after it was formed

I agree Kirk, all Type B compression fittings.

On the other hand, with respect, an end feed socket from BES is about 5p

Cost more than 5p for the end feed coupler if you ain't got any in the van!
For £9 it's always worth having a socket former in the van.
Not to be used on gas pipes ofcourse!!

have you ever asked corgi/gas safe if its OK?
I think this could be a gasmans myth that you cant use it on gas

True, and I still have one from my BG days! But I've ALWAYS got a range of 8/15/22 fittings in my drawers.

I'm pretty sure it would be contentious to use with gas as its weakening the pipe slightly when the socket is formed.

when i was a lad, i used to have to pull the ends off the bundles and drift the whole lot before taking in.
my expanders are one of my favourite tools.
i never done many kingley fittings, but my old boss had to have a hand operation where he reaconed his fingers had curled up due to gripping the pipe.

I've had it on good authority that socket formed joints are fine for gas pipes.
The local gas safe inspector has them in his own house, I queried them with him and he reckons they're fine, no problem.

:D that is what I was told, I been using my pipe expander on gas pipes...but I was keeping quiet just in case

Absolutely fine to use a pipe expander and covered under bs6891.

Never leave home without expander and tee former.

it says you can cut into lead and form a tee connection with new copper as well as long as it is soldered properly with lead solder not unleaded

Socket formed joint on gas pipe is an 'inappropiate fitting'. Read the Regs chaps!!

What do you use for your tee extractor joints mate? Brazing with Oxy/Act or silver solder?
